COQUILLE VALLEY SENTINEL Thursday, July 21, 1955 It's N o t Hard and Shorthanded Skywakh Keeps Constant Vigil For Aircraft It’s not hard to become a Sky- w atcher. All it requires is a little time, norm al sight and hearing. Coquille’s Skyw atch post is con sidered one of th e key posts in th e p erim eter area of th e a ir d e fense system and as such, is th e post w hich alerts some 19 other Skyw atch units in this area. Even so, m any of the shifts r e m ain unfilled and the h ard -w o rk ing supervisor, M rs. M argaret Holton, spends m any of her free hours scanning th e skies because no one else seems to w an t to do it. Coquille’s Skyw atch post o b served its second birth d ay last T hursday (Ju ly 14) by being put on a regional exercise alert. Thus, hum an eyes and ears are added to the ra d a r defense system to m ake sure th a t no unreported or u n friendly planes reach ou r nation. In addition to this valuable work, the Skyw atch has m ore than proved its w orth by spotting civ ilian planes w hich w ere off-course, on fire or being forced down som ewhere. Supplem enting th e w ork of a d u lt m em bers of the S kyw atch is the T een-A gers club headed by P resident Alice C am pbell and aid ed by the club counsellor, E. C. Aum iller. T he group has been one of the m ost active such clubs in the sta te and it now ran k s about th ird in activity. Duties of a person on S kyw atch include observing, ev aluating and reporting all planes in this area. The average shift is only four hours. F u rth e r inform ation about the Skyw atch and its duties m ay be obtained from anyone of th e u n it’s officers. They are Mrs. Holton, supervisor; W. H. P etre, chief ob server; Mrs. Florence DeNoma, secretary; Mrs. Ju lin a Colter, tre a su re r; Mrs. Viola M iller, su p ply officer, and Mrs. Vi Buckley and Mrs. B ernadine Phillips, fi nance officers. • • Room A va ila ble In C ity Parking Lots Spaces are still available in the two city parking lots for re n t by th e m onth. The tw o lots a re on Main stree t and at T hird an d A l d e r streets. Space in th e Main stree t lot ren ts fo r $7.50 a m onth and in the Third street lot for $3.00. A ppli cation for space may be m ade to H arvey Crim, city recorder. The m ain idea behind th e es tablishm ent of th e lots is to p ro vide a place to p ark for persons who m ust rem ain dow ntow n m ost of the day, so th a t they w ill not take up space at p ark in g meters. • • (Form erly Kash and Karry) N O TIC E - - Advertised Week End Specials Also E ffective M onday, July 25 W hile Supply Lasts!
