STULLER m . 0« colorful 1952 county fair just completed. Never has a fair held the interest of so many people so well and completely. From the opening of the gates in the mornings until closing in the darkened hours of the night, the people of Coos and Curry county enjoyed a real county fair. Strangely enough there are only a hand ful of real county fairs left in the state of Oregon. When once thirty-six Oregon coun ties celebrated the coming of fall and harvest season, now only such doughty people as those in Coos, Curry Deschutes, Multnomah, Tilla mook, and a very few others dare to put on a countywide festival. The change in habits of a people. The growth of cars. New highways and new recre ation spots. New social and cultural activities. A ll account for the competition a county fair feels. . __ . Yes, things aren’t the same as they used to be, but we dare say the Coos county fair is even better than it used to be. And for the work of Harold Clarno, Sam Dement, and all the other members of the board, we say “ thanks’* from an entire community. ». annas Ralph P. Stellar Quite An Editorial! Oregon’s Portland JO U R N A L stole a march on the rest of the big city dailies of the nation this week when they brought out the fact that Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois, and aspirant for the presidency on the democratic ticket, is a “hard man with a penny,” by his own admission. In what is likely to be the scoop of the year, the Portland daily, took a stand endors- ing Stevenson for the presidency, and also re printed a letter from the Illinois governor stating the fact that he realized there was a Washington and pointing out that he had had one in Illinois which he has cleaned up quite well. There w ill be lots s of t fun, e h edi' g speaking, across the land with the J< personal letter from Stevenson. But the can dor of the letter is refreshing. We doubt whether or not many political candidates would have written such a letter as Stevenson did. And that makes him even a better candi date than he was before. ’in B.
