This tremendous expenditure is necessary to
provide you with the kind of service you went and
deserve. The money to provide this equipment will
come from the investing public. I t cannot be obtained
unless we are able to insure fair earnings for these
investors. Therefore, we have found it necessary to
request increases in telephone rates— the first in­
creased rates since 1946.
The new equipment we have already installed
and which we are planning enables us to operate our
system more economically. Neither this saving nor
our increased totsl income has kept pace with mount­
ing operating and material coats. Because of them,
however, we have been able to keep our rate increases
to a minimum, and these changes are much lower
then increases in most other prices in this same
time period.
