Lumber processing firm s and
logging, although contributing the
greatest number of the unem
ployed, are still operating to a
greater extent than in moat previ
ous years, with expected layoffs
postponed u ntil at least after the
firs t o f the year. Wet and stormy
weather has hampered logging
and trucking work in recent weeks,
but comparatively few have ceased
operation due to weather d iffic u l
ties alone. A drop in market de
mand for specialized products has
caused layoffs of personnel among
certain firms.

Counties, rose to an estimated
2020, including 490 women, and
508 veterans. Almost 750 new
claims for unemployment were
filed during November, although
the totals were kept down to some
extent by a number returning to
work or finding other jobs, while
a growing number have already
drawn their maximum benefits,
or found not eligible due to lack
of sufficient earnings during their
base year employment of 1948.
Reedsport and Myrtle Point again
this year, continue to be relative
ly high spots of unemployment
due to the lumber industry. This
may be due to the small size of
sawmill and logging operations,
long hauls affected by the weath
er and altitude, and limited mark
et fo r logs and rough lumber in
the vicinity.
