Wednesday evening, June 30, the Active club ran into their toughest game of the season when they bump ed up against a greatly improved Cranberry team. The Merchants maintained a lead of 2-1 until the sixth inning, when a hit and an error combined to allow two Active run ners to crocs tire plate and give the Actlvlans that one run margin. The final score was 3-2. A double-header was staged Wed nesday evening, July 7, between Lo renz and Stevens; and Eagles vs. Merchants. Lorenz finally broke into the win column of the second half standings by outhitting the Stevens hardware team 11-8. In the second game, the Cranberry Merchants took a slugfest from a fighting Eagles team by a score of 16-9. The game was called at the end of five innings on account of darkness. For the past H year and one half, Mrs. Winkels has H been connected with the Farmer*» Home Administration at Grants Pass M and Medford, and she served previ ously with the same organization in Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in economics. Mrs. Winkels succeeds Mrs. Helen A. Running, who is now residing in North Bend. • , • H H Mrs. Ella S. Winkels, new county home demonstration agent for Coos county, was honored at a reception held on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. May Maskey at Coos River. The affair was arranged by the county home extension chairmen and the alumnae. Also present was Miss Frances Clinton, of Corvallis, assist ant state leader in the home exten sion department, who is in thexioun- ty fo r several days this week. 9 Home Demonstration Agent Named Reception Given COQUILLE, OREGON ED W ALKER The World’s Amateur Softball Championships will open in Portland the night of September 12 and close two weeks later on September 26th, officials in charge of the tournament announced after receiving confirmation of the dates from M. J. Pauley, ex ecutive secretary of the National Softball association. The tourney to be held west of Cleveland for the first time in history will involve the 16 top girls’ teams and the best 16 men’s teams in the world. The girls will decide their championship first, launching action September 12th and playing nightly to the 18th, when the final j tilt w ill be staged. The 18 regional mens title clubs I will inaugurate their tourney Sun- 1 day September 19 and continue i through the 26th. ; Transportation is being arranged for the various teams to visit out-of- etty points of interest and it is the hope of the committee that some of the many regional champions may be scheduled for games in cities and towns outside of Portland.
