Recent count shows that with last Sunday's catch, the Coquille fishermen are around twenty salmon ahead. No cotnplete reports were gathered up but to be added to the above catch es are those of Soren Buus, Jack Smith and Others who didn’t do bad ly themselves on Sunday. • Bass fishing continues to be un satisfactory this year with no good reports coming from the Bay. Re- ■ cently two unnamed Broadbent citi zens came home with three stripers | of good size, but reports from such , fishing enthusiasts of the striper tribe i as Bill Ortman of The Sentinel staff (who by the way spends a few hours ion the slough every week-end) indi- . cate bass aren’t what they ought to be. Tenmile lake, however, Is yielding I good catches of large perch— large: 110 to 13 inches—and also some nice I cata. We still think there’s no cat i just like the Coquille river cat, but our culinary experts mi fishing cui sine tell us that If the Lakeside va- I rlety are handled with care, and fried ! to a nice golden brown, they are Just | as good. In fact, they say they got their start from a barrel stolen from the supply originally shipped to Southwestern Oregon for the Coquille river. The story— and that's all we know that it is for sure—goes that Jess Barton, Sr., had had some catfish shipped down and while waiting on the S. P. dock at Marshfield some snooping fisherman got away with one barrel that got dumped in Ten- mile lake instead of the Coquille river. Be that as It may, there are plenty of them in the Coquille, and few small catches are being made once in a while, in between the rain showers, on the banks of Fat Elk.
