Mrs. Claris Mast served as chaplain and Rosa M iller was the musician. Officers from Coquille and Myrtle Point granges were also installed during the evening. Following the installation ceremon ies Mr. Gustofson spoke briefly on the grange and its ideals. Short talks were also given by master, John Car man and Ralph Gibbs, Ted Green and Roderick Hermann, ail past masters of Broadbent Grange. Other officers to be installed but unable to be present were, lecturer, Thomas Luttrell; chaplain. Mrs. , Thomas Luttrell; treasurer, Clint Car- , man; Ceres, Ruth Roberts; Pomona, Dorothy Grant; lady assistant, Mrs. Roderick Hermann; juvenile matron, Mrs. Ralph Gibbs; executive com mittee, Guy Grant, James McWilliams and R. P. Carman. These officers w ill be installed by their own grange at a later date. A lunch of donuts and coffee was served to a crowd of about 75 grangers and friends at the close of the evening. e Christmas Party Held A Christmas party and gift ex change was held at the school house Tuesday afternoon by the school children in their respective rooms. School closed following the party and w ill remain closed until January 5. • Guest A t Gibb« A guest at the Ralph Gibb« home on Thursday evening was Mr Gibbs’ ¡sister, Mrs. Roland Warner. M r. and Mrs. Gibb« accompanied her to her home at Lorraine on Friday after noon. They returned home the same evening. Mr. and Mrs. Warner ar rived several days ago to be with ¡Roland’s father who is seriously ill. Another brother, Ellis Warner of Vale arrived the first of the week to be with his father also. ! Move« To New House Leon Arne has moved into his new house which he has recently com pleted oo part of the Laird estate on Rhoda Creek. He purchased the pro perty last spring. Mr. Arne planned to leave the first of the week lor Cot tage Grove where he w ill visit until after the holidays. He w ill be a guest at the homes of his brothers, Rufus and Claude Arne during his stay in Cottage Grove. O e T e Gold Mrs. George Nelson accompanied by , her mother, Mrs. N rilie Armstrong left on Tuesday for Gold Beach where they w ill tg- house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans, until after Christ mas. The Evanses operate the Green Lantern Cafe in Gold Beach. Mrs. Evans is also a daughter of Mrs. Armstrong. • Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Ex pected Christmas day dinner guests at the Watson home are her parents Mr. and Mrs. Pete Parrish of Myrtle Point and Mr. and Mrs. William J rM of Coquille. Mrs. Thrower is a sister of Mrs. Watson. • A Christmas party was enjoyed by the Grange, the Juvenile Grange and their friends at the grange hall Sat urday evening. An interesting pro gram under the direction of the lec turer, Mrs. Roderick Hermann was presented. Master John Carman gave a brief address of welcame following which Christmas Carols were enjoyed by the audience. A discussion on the meaning of Christmas and when the practice of bringing Christmas gifts originated was led by the lecturer. Readings and musical selections were also included among the pro gram numbers. Short articles on how Christmas would be observed in other countries this year were read by various ones from the audience A brightly decorated Christmas tree surrounded by gayly wrapped packages made an appropriate set ting for Santa who arrived in person in time to give oranges to the kiddies and distribute the gifts. Games were played until • late hour when home made candy, popcorn balls, mixed nuts, fruit cake and coffee were served by the juvenile to the grangers and their friend«. • Someth Inc new In pie i What? And Why?—Daniel Gibbs-i-As for the reason of the shiner, and! believe you, me, it is a dandy, there are sev eral surmises, among them of course, the proverbial door in the dark, and the young man is receiving no end of razzing from his school mates. But Danny “ain’t talkin’”. Confidentially though the truth of the matter Is this Daniel received the black eye at basketball practice one evening when he and hit opponent came together head on. The other fellows head proved the hardest— hence the black A t Norway (Too late for last week) - The school house was the scene of a children’s party Friday afternoon when Santa Claus came and gave gifts to all the youngsters and their parents. The children rested before their stage performance in the eve ning for the parents and friends. The school house was filled to capacity and everyone enjoyed the program. Rufus Hylander had a telephone call from Portland Saturday inform ing him that his wife was greatly im proved, which is good news. Bob Detlefsen came in Tuesday evening from Corvallis to spend the Christmas Holidays with her folks, M r. and Mrs. Tom Detlefsen and Mary Ann. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Soper who have been visiting the Ed Brodies left the first of the week for their home in Albany, and to spend the Christmas Holiday withAheir children. Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Brodie and sons had Sunday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Melby. Mrs. Melby had her home beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. Walter Smith arrived home from Corvallis Friday evening to spend the Christmas holidays with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Schmidt. Mr. and Mrs. Patricia McKeown and son came in from Corvallis to spend the holidays with his mother and sisters in Coquille, Mrs. Mary McKeown and Norene and Madeline, also to be with Mrs. McKeowns father, Mayor Herman F. Tadsen. They expect to be here a couple of weeks and by that time Herman w ill have his grandson, Teddy, help ing in the store. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Larmon and daughter, Violet Gossen and M r. and Mrs. Tom Gossen and fam ily left Saturday morning for Washington to spend the holidays with their parents.
