annual meeting of the Oregon Tubsr-
eulosis Association in Portland next
Tuesday and Wednesday are Mrs. J.
T. Brand, president of the Coos Coun
ty Public Health Association, and
Mrs. W. J. Conrad who has been ac
tive in the local work as county Tu
berculosis seal sale chairman.
For fifteen yeans the Oregon Tu
berculosis Association has been hold
ing such annual meetings and each
year has seen an increase in attend
ance and an increasing interest on
the part of the delegates. The ses
sions this year which wiU open Tues
day, February 25, at 9 a. m., in the
Portland Public Library will bo un
usually interesting and informative,
according to Mrs. Saidie Orr Dunbar,
executive secretary of the association.
Several dinner parties and theatre
parties are being planned foT Tuesday
night. Representatives and members
of many women's clubs, civic Organi
zations, county health unite, medical
societies, official state agencies and
other groups are expected.
Mrs. Brand is to represent the Coos
County Public Health Aaeociatton of
ficially, and will present the presi
dent’s report of the association’« ac
tivities for the past year at the meet
ing Wednesday morning. The presi
dents of the nineteen other county as
sociations in the state that are affili
ated with the tuberculosis.association
will also present their reports. Mrs.
Dunbar states that as a result of the
active work of many associations
during the pact year keen interest in
these records is expected.
The man or woman who is active in
civic affairs is appointed in each com
munity to serve as chairman of the
Better Homes Committee for that
place. Th« chairman then selects a
committee of representative men and
women to conduct the campaign. These
campaigns very according to the size
and conditions of the community, and
include programs of lectures, demon
strations, and contests. Wherever pos
sible a house is planned and built, or
a suitable one borrowed and furnished.
In this way families of modest means
are encouraged toward homo owner
ship and are shown how a bouse of
good design and construction can be
built at a coot within their means.
Through such demonstrations prospec
tive homo owners receive many helps
and suggestions for the planning, pur
chase or building of homes, and many
famines aro inspired to make neces
sary improvements in their homes.
The complete furnishing of such dem
onstration houses on a restricted bod-
get is helpful in showing to those con
templating the furnishing or refur
nishing of a home the standards of
good taste combined with
iy.

house are usually selected and placed
by students of home eeeeiomies. Sev
eral houses used for demonstrations
in past campaigns were built by Mu-
dents of carpentry and manual train
ing chutes.
The demonstration of recondition
ing an old and perhaps dilapidated
house, to make it comfortable and con
venient, is another phase of Better
Homes Work. Such houses aro usual
ly furnished with done-over furniture
