Newspaper Page Text™ COQUILLR Improved Mammoth Artichokes (From County Agent’s Office) The Mammoth White Freneh «Arti choke .s proving to be one of the highest yielders of hog“ feed that can be gro^n on the Pacific coast This new variety of artichokes differs from the old Jerusalem in that it gives twice the yield, has larger tubers, and is produced in hills rather than scat tered out through the ground. A yield of 600 bushala to the acre haa been obtained on average land at the Ore- Corvallis, while Mr. Frasier of Otis, Oregon, where conditions are some what similar to Coos county, has se cured a yield of 1,000 bushels per acre. With yields like this, it is doubtful if any other crop will com pare with this improved Artichoke as a producer of hog feed. Not alone ia the Artichoke a good hog feed, but ia fed to rows with good results. The tops are used as green feed for cows and makes a fairly good ensilage. The feeding value ia little better than potatoes and one and one- half times better than carrots or beets. The digestible nutriments of 100 pounds of artichokes is: 1 lb pro tein, 14.6 lbs. carbohydrates and L10 lb fait. This makes a high nutritive ration of 1 to 15.8, which shows the necessity of protein supplements. With a supplement of skimmed milk and grain, hogs make very satisfac tory gains on artichokes. A late chemical discovery of con verting the starch of artichokes into levulose sugar, which is 50 per cent sweeter than cane sugar, has possi bilities of making the eoast section a factor in sugar production. Through the county agent’s office, several small acreages of artichokes are being planted for the purpose of securing « supply of seed for next year. Sewing Girls Complete Work The following clubs under the boys and girls club work are rapidly fin ishing up their work and several club members have already sent in all their work including their final re- porU. From the Bridge Sewing Club th« following girls have been reported by their leaders: Mrs. Ruth Springer,'as having completed their sowing and handwork; Vena England, Marvel Brode, Allene Kirkendall, Ionella Cur tiss, Hallie Knight and Irene Shields. She also reports that the Division I girls will soon have their reports roady to send to H. C. Seymour. Of the Myrtle Point Sewing Club girls under the leadership of Effie K. Shinjol), the following have already completed their work: Opal Willey, Helen Gill, Louise Lemon, Dorothy Strong, Sylvia Culbertson, Imogene Burgees, Ads Msy Culbertson, Dorris Howson, Helms Olsen, Zelma Thomp son, and others of both the sewing and cooking class will very soon finish up their work. Vote on State Bird Word has been received from the Audubon Society that the time has been extended in which boys and girls will be allowed to vote on the State Bird for Oregon. Two summer schools, the Mul key school and Fat Elk have shown a strong preference for the Bluebird. Member Orange “O” Asa’n Carabelle Mintonye, of Coquille, junior in vocational education, has been an active member of the Orange “O” association this year. The re quirement is 1000 points earned in different types of athletics: hockey, volleyball, baaobaU, basketball, swim ming, track and hiking. Brophy, adjutant of the Coquille Valley Post, Veterans <u k oreign Wars. The item on poppies published last week was handed to us by the Coquille Post of the Amer- Following is. President Coolidge’s letter: The annual sale of poppies under the auspices of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, for use on Memorial Day, has a double significance. It perpetuates and em phasises a particularly fine symbol ism, calling to mind the supreme sac rifices of those who died in the ser vice of our country. 8uch symbolism cannot but have its effect in inspiring us to the sacrifices demanded of all good citixens in peace times. Fur thermore, those who buy these pop pies do something very real to help the disabled veterans who in mak ing them are able to contribute to their own support. I would commend this movement heartily, and my hope is for its con tinued success.
