Ml « f The Coquille Valley Sen Oregon Historical Society Auditorium X MiiVi THE PAPER THAT’S I^IKE A LETTER FROM HOME VOL. XXII. NO. 18. WILLITPAYTHEM? Daily News Treats Coquille Pro test as Laudation for . Its Policy » COQUILLE, COO8 COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, MAY 21, 192«. ................ ’l I - !■ ................................ ..... —............... ' ■ —■ To Ask for Next State Shoot Coquille is going to make a bid for the 1927 state shoot when the local sportsmen are at CorvaHis next week. At the shoot down at Medford the first of thia week, several of those at tending urged the Coquille contingent to go after it, and the idea has been favorably received when broached here.' It will require an outlay of |500 or 8600 to stage a shoot of that magni tude, but the benefits cannot be over estimated. With 400 or 500 people here next May from all over 'the northwest, Coquille cannot but receive a great deal of good advertising. The Coquille Rod 4 Gun Chib has not had a meeting yetf to formally ex tend an invitation to "hold next year’s shoot here, but it will no doubt do so. About a dozen of Coquille's crack shots will attend the shoot next Fri day, Saturday- and Sunday at Cor vallis, when the location for the 1927 shoot will be decided. If this big annual event in sporte- men’s affairs can be brought to Co- quille, a hearty welcome and recep- tion is assured the visitors. . Coquille was certainly handed a prise package by the Southwestern Oregon Daily News this week. As 5B protest against the mud slinging attacks of that newspaper, about sixty of the prominent citisens here, signed a protest against the unfair tactics the News has been using, and asked its management to publish it. > / _ ’ The article was printed on Wednes day, preceded by untruthful head lines, stating that Coos county com munities endorse the News and its “fair play*’ policy. True, a hastily prepared petition from Myrtle Point, lauding the News, followed the one from Coqui Me. But no one who read the whole story could be in doubt as to Coquille’s attitude, however, much it was camouflaged by those past masters of “putting it over” on their friends. One newspaper man, with yean of experience in daily paper publication —he has ho connection with the Sen tinel—characterises it as “the worst exhibition of newspaper chicanery I ever saw in my life.” It was smoothly done. You cannot help admiring the colossal nerve of the men who endeavor to twist and change a condemnation into a com mendation, and you have to admit that the News has banded Coquille a lemon. Its manager, on Wednesday, told those who presented the News with Decoration Day program will be carried out by W. R. C., G. A. R. <fo not appreciate this attitude on the part of the Coquille people, and it will not change our policy In the least.” After reading the story in that sheet no one can fail to realize that the leopard does not change its spot». day, May 31st, 9:30, all who wish to march with these organisations will be at Community Hall at that hour and march to the bridge where ser vice» for sailors and marines will be jta “Laurel” Out Next Week The 1926 Laurel, which did not f® to press until after May 1, will be ready of delivery the first of next week, probably on Monday.
