Benham and E rnest Krewson were off on a day’s trip Mon- Last week Wednesday a man from a garage in Coquille brought one of the Bayler boys out as fa r as Ev erest Howe’s place; he hdU no license for hauling passengers, the pries was not set before leaving Coquille. A t the end o f the trip the charge was $10 —Bayler would not pay it. He did pay five. It is reported the man from the garage was very violent and pro fane in thé highway, In front of Howe's and told Baylor that if he ev- saw him lying in the road with a broken leg that he would not stop to pick him up. If he saw him in the road all cut to pieces he would not stop to pick up the pieces. That fe l low must be a regular walking adver tisement for a garage. ' When a man pays $6— or fid —to ride 20 miles, it must be he has m ort money than time. As I have always been blessed with more time than money, it would be a walk for me. And count the money not paid out as wages received. The Goldgroves o f the southern part of Curry county passed Saturday with 680 head o f goats bought in Douglas county near Sutherlin. I t was the fifth day with goats and would take them 10 or l ? days more to get home. They run 8,000 head at sheep and have about 4,000 acres o f land for the goats to browse on. The men had their wives with them. Those who led the herd in a Bukk had to have camp ready when the man and woman who shooed the goats along caught up. It seemed to be a sort o f pleasure trip mixed with business. Governor Pierce has made a bauble o f the state’s prison. He stood In with State Treasurer Hoff and made a bauble o f the state training school for boys. If Pierce tries to debauch the State Hospital for the Insane by firing Dr. Steiner, he surely must have less sense than his mother gave him credit for. Several years ago there was a man who tried to make politi cal capital out o f the Insane asylum but Bowerman did not get far with It If Pierce knows anything he knows that there Is not a man in the state o f Oregon who is the equal o f Dr. Steiner fo r the job as the head o f the Insane Asylum ; he knows more than that, he knows in his fight sgainst Dr. 8teiner he is fighting against the best interests o f the state. In bther words he is not a governor, but a hollow, double-jointed, 'hum p backed peanut politician trying to make it appear that his shell is full o f meat. His blab about taxes and the reduction o f taxes before and a f ter election eras and is a stunt in wind bubble blow ing/ and when he want* a change in the wind babbles, he cha gee the temperature o f the suds. One time he says it can be done, then he says K can’t be done. You have paid oyur money, take your choice in the governor’s bubbles for they are all the same toys whether they are blue, yellow or green. Governor Pierce is entitled to be congratulated in his actions towards the condemned murderer, he has let them hang. It may be that he felt sure that was the only way he keep any o f the state’s prisoners within bounds.
