N ot W ear W hite? low ing article on the beet I the hunting seaaon’* homi- sontributed to the Oregon We, the undersigned MEMBERS OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION o f Portland, hereby voice an emphatic protest against the campaign o f vilification conducted by a certain woman lecturer and her associates— directed against the Sisters o f Providence and St. Vincent’s Hospital, Portland. Our daily contact fo r years with the Bisters and their Hospital has thoroughly fam iliarised us with their lofty standard o f personal mem ls, their unimpeachable character and efficiency. N ot being of the Catholic faith, we have no ends to serve espept the highest standards o f oar profession; as medical men, we value our own reputation and integrity toe highly to be actively associated with any organisation o f institution upon which serious reflections could be cast. Therefore we regard this vili fication o f the Sisters and their institution as a reflection upon ourselves. We denounce as the crudest and moot malicious form o f falsehood statements like them ; That the Sisters are cruelly treated by their superiors; that they are enslaved; that they are deprived o f phy sical liberty; that there ere morel irregularities o f any kind connected with their Sisterhood or their private livee. The untiring labors and countless benefactions o f the Sisters o f Providt>nce and their Hospital (S t. Vincent’s ) during their long term o f devoted service in Portland—m erit fo r them the deepest gratitude from our citisens. Them should deprecate and denounce the libelous falsehoods end slan derous insinuations, which the above referred to “ ex-nun lecturer" (Lucretie or Elisabeth Schoffen) has been disseminating. Dr. S.
