While they were gone aiv- jther party, not, probably in search of a still, but believing they could put it to good use when they saw it, came along and carried it off. On returning and finding the still missing .hey were righteously indignant at the thieves and began to talk of ap pealing to the officers to help them recover ft and punish the offenders. Caldwell, who was here last summer as director of the Westco or admean Chautauqua, was in tow n Tuesday, on Chautauqua business. Hs had a proposition to put up to the guarantors o f oq r 1922 Chautauqua of the following nature: . If Coquille would be satisfied with a five day season instead of a six day, the company would send the jame quality o f talent for the five Jays as had been planned for the six, the only difference being there would be two sessions less. Then the com pany would surrender all claim on season tickets sold in excess o f the guaranteed $1000 and would abrogate that part o f the qontraot under which they receive 75 per cent o f the gener al admissions. In other words the program would be sold fo r a flat fl.OOO and the company would re vive no more than that under any circumstances. In addition there will not ,be any war tax o f $100 to pajr,| because any excess above the $1000 and local expenses will be kept in a Chautauqua fund or used fo r educa tional or charitable proposes, none of the excess going for personal profit. Mr. Caldwell secured the signa tures of about fifty per cent o f the guarantors of next year’s Chautauqua to such an agreement, to whom it ap pears to be a much better arrangement than did the contract originally signed. _ : .. A committee consisting o f E. F. Ellingsen, A . C. Lukens and Wm. Betty* was last week appointed by Mayor Hamilton and Bert Gould to examine the condition o f Goulds’ Hall. They performed that duty the first o f this week and to the boot o f their knowledge and belief the build huilrf- ing is muct safer now than it was a year and two years ago when ap proximately a thousand people were upstairs. New foundation sills around the whole building and the strengthening support o f pillars and braces, have made the building perfectely safe for a much larger crowd than can bo seat ed up there, and attendance will be limited to seating capacity, both to night for “ The Old Maids’ Conven tion” and tomorrow night fo r (1 Cornfield Canaries and Husking Bee. Eldridgs, general mana ger o f the league, offered it as his opinion that ths dairyman will “hot be paid anything. 1 feat tha members o f the will not get a nickel of the amounts due them if liquidation occurs,” h* A t the meeting o f the directors* Tuesday hs stated that i f unclosed pools could b* set aside fo r two o r throe years, th* league could continue to operate and pay .for product at market rates'beginning November 16. “ We have on hand approximately., $46,000 o f unsold product and $60,000 in accounts receivable, or assets total ing about $ 111 , 000 ,” explained Eld- ridge. “ Our plants with a book valu* o f $416,000, covered by preferred stock, are actually overcapitalised to an amount o f at least $250,000. “ Our Portland plant, which is on our books at $80,000 will soli for not to exceed $16,000 to $ 20,000 and it must be cold for each if wc liquidate. The overcapitalization o f plants purchased by the league is traced back to the war values at which they went held when taken over by th* league and also to mistakes in judgment on the part o f the appraisers. The first effort in liquidation, it w>* said, will be to satisfy holders o f . preferred stock, but P-. H.
