Were you a Blockbuster customer back in
the day? Any memories of a local store?
Oh yeah, we had one. I grew up in a pretty
small town in New Jersey and we had a
Blockbuster in our town, in our shopping center
by the Shop Rite. And I remember where it was.
It looked exactly like our set on the show does
(laughs) and that was a part of growing up,
those weekends where you’d go on Friday night.
Everyone would go and pick out a movie for the
weekend and my brother and I would fight over
which movies we wanted to get.

OF ‘BLOCKBUSTER’ ON NETFLIX
And I remember going as a teenager by myself
a few times and I feel like my teen years was
when it started to kind of phase out and I
remember it might have closed when I was
in college. And at the time, being like, “Oh
yeah, well that makes sense. Now we get our
DVDs in the mail.” Like I was an early Netflix
customer where I used to get the DVDs in the
mail (laughs) and I go, “Oh, that’s easier.” But
then as more time goes on, you go, “Oh man,
I kind of miss going to the video store, that
experience.”
Will you get an opportunity to direct an
episode of “Blockbuster” at some point?
Well, I’ve directed a few other shows, and what
I learned on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was I love
directing. I’m actually in prep right now to direct
another episode on “Grand Crew” but I hate
acting and directing at the same time (laughs).
I’m not built for it. I don’t like it. It’s not fun and
it’s very stressful and I feel like I’m doing both
jobs not to the best of my ability. So I don’t know
if I would pursue it on “Blockbuster.” I think
for now I’m kind of interested in keeping them
separate.
