SATuRDAY, MAY 21, 2022
College student is tested trying to reason with mom
I’ve never shared a lot with
her regarding my social life
because she has always been
very strict (for instance, my dad
knows I enjoy tailgating and par-
tying as long as my grades are
good). I am very responsible
and always take care of every-
thing that needs to be completed
before I let myself have fun. Dad
knows this and trusts me. How-
ever, I couldn’t fathom telling
my mom about it.
I think part of the problem is
she grew up abroad, and when
she came to the U.S. for college
in the 1990s, she faced a severe
culture shock. We have always
been very different people. Con-
trary to what she may think,
DEAR ABBY: I am a
freshman at a Midwestern uni-
versity, and I love it. I finished
my first semester with straight
A’s, and my second semester has
been strong. I have a great group
of friends and have already made
plenty of memories. My problem
is I have been having a disagree-
ment with my mom. I would
like to rush a sorority in the fall,
and while my dad is fine with it,
my mother won’t even entertain
the topic.
my main reason for joining a
sorority is not “to party.” It’s an
attractive option for off-campus
housing, and I think it would be
an effective way to meet more
people (especially at such a big
school). If I don’t like how rush
pans out for me, I have no issue
with dropping out, but I think it
would be worth a try.
I want to have an open con-
versation with Mom, but she is
very close-minded. I don’t want
to go behind her back, because
I think that would only do more
harm than good. How should I
navigate this conversation? —
GOING GREEK?
DEAR GOING: As much
as you dread it, you must have
a sit-down, comprehensive con-
versation with your mother
about this. Emphasize the ben-
efits of being in a sorority. She
may be concerned because in
some Greek organizations there
have been severe abuses of the
pledges, some of which were
so dangerous that students lost
their lives. You may also want to
research the compliance history
of the Greek organizations on
your campus before addressing
the subject with your mother,
so you can allay any concerns
she has.
DEAR ABBY: My
27-year-old daughter has issues
due to a bitter divorce between
her father and me. She treats us
poorly, blames her problems on
us and feels she is justified. How
do I handle this? I don’t think
she respects either of us much.
As for our relationship, we get
along as long as things are going
OK for her. But if she’s having
a difficult day, I get the blame.
Advice? — COLD-SHOUL-
DERED IN NEW YORK
DEAR COLD-SHOUL-
DERED: Tolerating your daugh-
ter’s behavior isn’t healthy for
either of you. Encourage her to
seek professional help for her
“issues,” and when she starts
the blame game or being disre-
spectful, shorten the visit, end
the phone call or otherwise dis-
tance yourself.
has been a good technique,
and fishing from a boat will
probably also be a good way
to fish the reservoir. Fishing
will likely be best at Unity
Reservoir over the next
couple of months while the
reservoir has a good amount
of water in it.

depth drops off. There are
some nice kokanee avail-
able this year with some
fish around 16 to 18 inches.
Jigging and trolling for
kokanee can both be pro-
ductive ways of fishing for
theme. The docks were
recently put in place for the
season at the county boat
ramp on the north end of
Wallowa Lake.
Grande Ronde River
Steelhead fishing is
closed until Sept. 1, 2022.
Variable flows may make
fishing difficult during
spring runoff. As the water
warms, bass fishing will
become better in the lower
Grande Ronde. Anglers are
reminded that bull trout and
chinook salmon may be
encountered in the Grande
Ronde River and must be
released unharmed.
Brownlee Reservoir
Reservoir is 11 feet
below full pool, and all boat
ramps are usable. Anglers
in the Powder River arm
have had good catches of
perch and bass have fre-
quently been caught. Some
crappie have been caught,
but cooler weather has
probably slowed the crappie
fishing. Bass fishing in the
upper reservoir has been
good when water tempera-
tures have warmed. How-
ever, during cooler weather,
bass fishing has been more
difficult. Anglers have had
some success trolling for
trout near the Burnt River.
Imnaha River
Hells Canyon
Reservoir
Ellen Morris Bishop/Wallowa County Chieftain, File
Bass anglers have had
some success, but many of
the fish have been small.
Trout fishing has been slow.
As the weather warms
anglers will be able to fish
for catfish throughout the
reservoir particularly from
late May on.
Oxbow Reservoir
Anglers have been suc-
cessful catching bass, and
bass fishing will likely
improve throughout the
year as the water tempera-
ture increases. Trout fishing
will probably be good in
the coming months espe-
cially when water tempera-
tures are in the low 50s.
The Imnaha River winds through Wallowa County.
a recent report of observa-
tions of dead trout at Thief
Valley Reservoir. However,
ODFW district fish staff
were unable to observe any
dead fish when they investi-
gated the report.
Unity Reservoir
Reservoir is nearly full,
and anglers have been suc-
cessful catching 16- to
17-inch rainbow trout.
Fishing from shore with bait
has been a good technique,
and fishing from a boat will
probably also be a good way
to fish the reservoir.
Wolf Creek Reservoir
Reservoir is slowly
filling, and the boat ramp
is now useable. However,
the reservoir is still very
low. Without a substantial
increase in water, the res-
ervoir may drop quickly
throughout the year so
fishing may be best over the
next couple months.
It will be stocked with
trout throughout the spring.
Fishing has been slow, and
the reservoir is still very
low, about 12% of capacity.
The water has now reached
the bottom of the Mason
Dam boat ramp. There prob-
ably is enough water to
launch small boats, but large
boats may need a bit more
Thief Valley Reservoir

ervoir drained significantly
last year, and there may not
be many fish that survived
through the fall and winter.
However, the reservoir has
recently been stocked with
rainbow trout. There was

Fishing has been good
for rainbow trout near
the south end of the lake.
Anglers have had success
using both flies and lures.
Anglers can have good suc-
cess wading out from shore
and casting lures or flies
near where fish are rising.
Boat anglers will have
better access to more of
the lake and may find fish
near areas where the depth
drops off. There are some
nice kokanee available this
year with some fish around
16 to 18 inches. Jigging and
trolling for kokanee can
both be productive ways of
fishing for them.
