Anthony scored a season- high 24 points off the bench, including 16 in the fourth quarter, and the Trail Blazers beat the Sixers 118-114 on Thursday night. “Once Carmelo gets it going, he’s still Carmelo. He reminded us of that tonight,” Rivers said. Damian Lillard had 30 points in Portland’s fourth win in fi ve games. Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 35 points and nine rebounds, and Ben Sim- mons added 23 points and 11 boards. The loss snapped a four-game road winning streak. The Eastern Conference- leading Sixers had won six of seven, with the only defeat during that span coming a week ago to the Trail Blaz- ers, 121-105. Tobias Harris’ free throws knotted the game at 109 be- fore Gary Trent Jr.’s 3-pointer put the Blazers back in front. Lillard added a basket to make it 114-109 with 1:15 left. Embiid’s pull-up closed the margin, then Curry’s 3-pointer tied it at 114 with 22.1 seconds left. Tripped by Harris, Anthony made a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining. The Ducks may fi nally be rounding a corner and could turn themselves into a contender in the Pac-12 race. Eugene Omoruyi had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Chris Duarte added 18 points and Oregon outlasted shorthanded Arizona State 75-64 on Thursday night. The Ducks (11-4, 6-3 Pac-12) shook off some early offensive struggles with a big run late in the fi rst half and stretched the lead to 16 early in the second to keep themselves in the Pac-12 race. “It’s exciting because we’ve got our whole team now and if we can avoid any more pauses, I think we can get better and better and better,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. The Sun Devils (6-9, 3-6) were missing two key play- ers, lost their leading scorer early in the second half and had a hard time fi nding an offensive rhythm after returning from their second COVID-19 pause. Arizona State used a late run to pull within seven before running out of steam to lose for the seventh time in nine games. Remy Martin led the Sun Devils with 30 points, but hobbled leading scorer Josh Christopher (back and leg) had no points in 17 minutes. Both teams are trying to get back on track after twice being hit with COVID-19 issues. The Ducks played one game in three weeks before re- turning to split against the Pac-12’s Washington schools last week. The Sun Devils were back after their second coro- navirus pause cost them two games, but were missing wing Marcus Bagley and forward Chris Osten to ankle injuries. Forward Taeshon Cherry also missed his eighth straight game due to personal reasons, leaving the Sun Devils with eight scholarship players. “We feel good,” said Oregon’s LJ Figueroa, who had 16 points. “When everyone’s touching the ball, we’re playing easy.” OREGON STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL Arizona pulls away late to hold off OSU Beavers, 70-61 TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — James Akinjo and Bennedict Mathurin had 14 points each on Thursday night, and Arizona bounced back from two straight road losses for a 70-61 win over Oregon State. Mathurin helped the Wildcats (14- 6, 8-6 Pac-12) pull away for good with back-to-back baskets, a layup and a 3-pointer, that made it 63-54 with 3:26 left. Christian Koloko capped the run with a dunk and Arizona led by no less than eight in the fi nal two minutes. Jarod Lucas and Ethan Thompson had 13 points each for the Beavers (10-9, 6-7). Gianni Hunt added 12 points and Warith Alatishe scored 10. Arizona never trailed after the fi rst two minutes of the game, but Oregon State kept it close through most of the second half, cutting the defi cit to 58-54 at the end of a 10-1 run on Lucas’ four-point play converted on a deep 3-pointer with 5:04 left. Oregon State committed 26 fouls to Arizona’s 12, and the Wildcats capitalized by outscoring the Beavers 23-6 at the foul line, 14-1 in the second half.
