February 2020 • www.baker5j.org 3 Bulldog Pride Future Center helps students prepare for life after high school L ife after high school is a big step, and the Baker Future Center is helping ease that transition by providing students opportunities to plan for their post- graduation life. The Future Center is located at BHS. Adriene Oster is the facilita- tor. The center, she said, helps students explore various options such as college, trade school, the military, and careers. “We’re trying to get students exposed to more career options,” Oster said. Current graduation require- ments include a career research paper (Extended Application), job shadow, resume, practice job interviews, and financial literacy lessons. Advisory classes utilize lessons in Virtual Job Shadow to meet other requirements for em- ployability and team building. Students can sign up outside the Future Center. Locally, the second-annual Baker County Job Fair will be held Thursday, April 9, at the Baker County Event Center. The morn- ing is reserved for students only, and Oster said juniors and seniors from all Baker County schools will participate. Students will complete a passport as they talk to employ- ers from at least four booths (three Scholarship work parties The Future Center hosted its first scholarship work party of the year in January. These sessions are open to seniors, juniors, and sopho- mores. Another is planned for late February. For information, check the center’s pages on Facebook and Instagram. Decision Day This spring BHS will feature Decision Day, an all-school as- sembly to honor seniors who are furthering their education in college, trade school, vocational school, or the military. The event will be held at noon on April 30. Parents are invited. “We’re congratulating them on the next step,” said senior Laura Illingsworth, who is a business intern at the Future Center and or- ganizing Decision Day along with junior Lacy Gyllenberg. Seniors who have committed to a post-graduation plan will parade into the gymnasium holding a sign signifying their choice. Each will be presented with a swag bag of goodies. Students will also sign a “Decision Day 2020” banner. Along with this event, the Future Center is collecting slips of paper from sophomores, juniors and se- niors with their name and plans for the future. These will be included in a large display in the commons area. Since the school year began, the Future Center has posted photos of seniors who have committed to a program after they graduate. These posts can be found on Instagram and Facebook. Search for Baker Future Center. District launches alumni website Site designed as a gathering place for alumni and retired faculty B aker School District has launched a website designed to be a gather- ing place for alumni of Baker High School and retired district faculty. The link is www.bakerhigha- lumni.org. The site provides a place for alumni to register and also post in a forum discussion. This will en- able Baker High graduates to share information about reunions and search for classmates. Those who sign up as retired faculty also have the ability to post in a forum discussion. In addition to connecting alum- ni, the site features a “Media and Press” link which includes press releases, electronic versions of the district’s Bulldog Pride publica- tion, and other current news about the district. A link on the home page makes it easy to request a high school transcript. District calendars and activity schedules will be uploaded for the convenience of those inter- ested in staying up-to-date on local events. A “Ways to Help” tab will provide information on those who would like to give back time or resources to their alma mater. Through the creation of this website, the District hopes to pro- vide a conduit for former graduates and retired staff to stay connected with their school and their fellow graduates.
