Chamber of Commerce will proceed
into Far Northern waters for a
i cruise of 8,316 miles to last 46 day»
that will carry them throughout
Alaskan waters to Siberia and back.
Ketchikan, the port of entry for
Alaska, a city built upon stilts or
piling upon which are laid weather­
beaten gray boards that serve as
streets, will be the first Alaskan
point visited.
From Ketchikan the mission will
sail uorthward 236 miles through
the famous Wraugeii Narrows and
passage
past
through the inside
Taku Glacier. 300 feet high and
over two miles wide, to Juneau, at
the mouth of the Taku river. Ju
neau is the capital city of Alaska ami
gateway to the mining regions of
the territory.
After leaving Juneau the trade en­
voys will steam 100 miles uorthward
to Skagway. Here connections an-
available with the White Pass X-
Yukon Railway to White Horse and
the Upper Yukon and the famous
Klondike country.
From Skagway the excursionists
will pass through the Lynn Canal.
cross Chatham Sound to Sitka, pic­
turesque and historic trading post.
Crossing the Gulf of Alaska, the
excursion will proceed from Sitka to
Cordova. After studying the Cop­
per River district the mission will
continue across Prince
William
Sound to Seward. Here a atop will
be made, permitting passengers time
to take a trip on the government
railroad to Anchorage.
From Seward the course is west-
ward to Kodiak. situated on Kodiak
island.
The remainder of the' itinerary
includes:
Cold Bay. scene of oil drilling:
along the shoes of the Alaska Pen­
insula past Lighthouse Rock and its
large sea lion rookeries; Dutch Har­
bor and Unalaska, past the codfish
banks to Bogoslof Island, where is
located an active volcano; the seal­
bearing Pribiloff Islands, Cape Chap­
lin and Anadir, Siberia.
Other
points to be touched are St. Law­
rence Island. Nome, through
the
Bering Straits into the Arctic and to
the Ice Pack.
Returning the next scheduled stop
is East Cape. Siberia, back to Nome,
thence across Norton Sound to St.
Michael, down the Bering Sea to
Akutan Island with its extensive
whaling stations. From Akutan the
course is across the Gulf of Alaska
to Seattle and thence to San Fran­
cisco, where the party is scheduled
to arrive August 29. Just 40 days
after the date of starting.

Necessity has compelled me to
make five trips within the past
month over the Oregon Mountain.
via Grants Pass-Crescent City high­
way, and, owing to the condition of
the road on the Oregon side. 1 have
found each trip to be so exhausting
as to positively dread the coining of
the next one.
Returning from Patrick’s Creek,
the road on the California side is in
an excellent condition with its well
rounded curves, its filled in gutters,
its pavement-like smoothness all
brought aliout by the every day
touches of a trained laborer, giving
the tourist the Impression that Cali­
fornia’s leaders are neither sleeping
nor resting on th*' laurels <4f a suc­
cessful “taxless." political campaign,
but, instead, are making every ef­
fort to live up to tlieir de luxe name •
But when th«- boundary line is
reachi'd, and you enter the Oregon
trail, instead of enjoying the grand
scenery before you, you. and all of
the occupants of your car (no matter
bow many) begin to strain nerves,
as well as muscles, to avoid the skull
.and cross bones that incbly awaits
you.

the passage, but rear their jagged
heads at every turn until peaceful

for a “soft drink” you cannot help

ists who charge our leaders with au­
dacity In permitting th«- circulation
of literature, lauding our climate
and sceni'i'y and at th«' -am«' time
are turning a deaf ear to picas for a
safe road over tin Oregon mountain.
And now that the season Is half
gone, and nothing on thia section of
the road having b , u done, is there ,
anyway to appeal to tin- reason of
the .ones possessing discretionary,
power?
If not. perhaps a toll-gat«: could

sults, would be gladly welcomed by
a suffering public.
