S.)— Whole islands denuded of vegetation by hordes of wild rabbits, birds by the thousands, which nest in the sands; a fisherman's paradise, where the catching of half a ton of sharks or food fish is the work of but an hour—these are some of the stories brought back by the U. S. S. Tana ger, Navy eagle boat, which recent ly made a series of cruises among the northwest islands of the Hawai ian group in order to permit a party of Government scientists to make a study of bird and plant life on these uninhabited and little known spots. The first cruise of the Tanager extended all the way to Midway Is land. the farthest west of the Hawai ian group, and included Bird Island. French Frigate Shoals. Gardiner’s island and many of the coral reefs en route. At Laysan, the party reported, there was evidence of a bitter war which had been waging between the rabbits and the plant life of the Is land. Pictures taken a few years ago show an island well covered witn vegetation of considerable variety, though none higher than bushes. Now the island is nearly bare and covered with sand. Rahits were everywhere. Although the land birds had suffered with the plants the albatresses, with their downy, recently hatched young drawn close ly about them, were there in thou sands, nestling on the bare sand so close together that members of the party in places had to pick a path between them. At Ocean Island seals were found in abundance, basking on the sand, Birds, too. were plentiful here, for there were no rabbits, and the vegetation was still quite dense. One of the results of the trip is that the Tanager now has as Its uiaacot "Kicky", a wild burro cap tured on Eastern Island, a Utile atoli near Midway. "Kicky" and more than a wore of his Immediate rela- Ilves, who were found on Eastern Island, are the descendants of a pair of burros taken out to the cable sta tion at Midway years ago. After the arrival of the original pair at Mlilway it was discovered that they wer« multiplying so fast that the Island would not have room enough to hold them, and all were deported to Eastern Island. Wholly untamed, the herd Is now roaming over this little atoll in the middle of the Pacific, and it was only after considerable difficulty that * ’Kicky” was captured and brought aboard the Tanager by the “goba".
