L. HOBART CO. Tho United Slate public health service I mulling Supplement No. 34 to doctor and health officer throughout tho country In an effort to check the spreading of the moat awful epidemic we have experienced for many year. In aniwer to the oft repeated attentions: "What 1 Spanish Influ enzu?" "1 It lomethlng now?" and "Doe It come from Spain?" the Bul letin' ay: "The dlfteaao now occurring In this country and called "Hpanlsh Influen za" resemble a very contagious kind of cold accompanied by fever, pain In tho head, oyw, ears, back or other purt of the body, and a feeling of iw-vcro sick nous. In most of the case the symptoms disappear In three or four days, the patient then rnpldly recovering; ome of th pa-l tlents, however, develop pneumonia, or Inflammation of the ear, or men Ingltl, and many of these compli cated cases die," 'Regardless of what others may remember or write or say, tho Ilulletlu states: "wnetncr this eplib-mlc of 'Spanish Influenza' a Identical with epidemics of form er years is not yet known." Epidemics have visited this coun try since 1647. It Is Interesting to know that the first epidemic wa brought here from Valencia, Spain Slnra that time there have been numerous epidemics of the disease the last occurring in 1S90. Although the present epidemic Is called "Span ish Influenza" there is no reason to believe it originated in Spain. Some writers who have studied the ques tion believe that the epidemic came from the Orient and they call atten tion to the fact that the Germans mention the d Incase as occurring along the eastern front In 1917." "There is as yet no certain way Jn which a single case of 'Spanish in fluenza' can 'be recognized." Without regard as to the particu lar kind of germ that causes the disease. "It is now believed that In fluenza Is always spread from per sou to person, tho germs being car ried with the air along with very of doors. In guarding against the contraction of the disease; "It Is Im portant that the body be kept strong and able to fight off disease germ. This can be done by having a proper proportion of work, play, and rest, by keeping the body welj clothed, and by eating sufficient, wholesome, and properly selected food." Also spend a much time as possible In the tun light. "It Is very Important that every person who becomes sick with In fluenza should go home and go to bed at once. This will help keep away dangerous complications and will, at the same time keep the pa tient from scattering the disease far and wide. Only such medicine should be given as Is prescribed by the doctor. It I foolish to ask the druggist to prescribe and may be dangerous to take the so-called "safe, sure, and harmless remedies adver tised by the patent medicine manu facturers," and cure-all druggists.
