A tew days sinew, a Southern Pa dflo detective named M. L. Couturt obtained a confession from McCellan to the effect that he was the man who Injured the soldier. Oa further investigation however It was found that the man was whol ly Irresponsible mentally and would assent to almost anything suggested to him by his questioners. Ia his examination yesterday he repeated ly asserted that ho had been ta Eng land. France, Belgium and Norway, bat stoutly maintained that he had never been oa board ship. Members ot the sheriff's office, af- ter proving that McCellan would consent to almost any suggestion made to him,' drew up an affidavit which McCellan read and which Was carefully read to him sentence by sentence, sad to each statement of which he verbally assented and signed under oath.
