Cana dian women are working In munition factories. There are 5.000 women workers, according to estimates com piled today, who are helping make the shells which England and her allies and dominions are hurling against the German lines. And to day comes the "romper suit" for women. That Is "rompers," like child ren wear, la the article of clothing that most nearly approaches the style ot a garment which Canadian manufacturers are preparing for their women employes. Canada bars the overalls, which sister workwomen sre wearing in England. The designers of the new habit think It will not only be popular In the machine shop and fuse room, but In the kitchen as well. When Mark Irish, director or labor of the Imperial munitions board, flrst broached the possibility or having women work in munitions factories, Canadian Hhollmukers declared It was "Impossible," because they could not be found. "Why God bts 'em," Director Irish replied, "wo are deluged with tliem and I'm unking women on the. waiting list not to get discoursed. " The Canadian plan is a dilution of labor not replacement of women for men In plants, but introduotlon of feminine workers so that male labor can ibe spread over a greater time and a greater number or machines. Four hundred women entered the factories at first. Some of these, of the teasure class, .found their French heels did not fit In with mak ing munitions and they dropped out. Some did not like the grime and dirt. But forty of the original number stuck. Then Canadian women awoke to the necessity for munitions and real and earnest workers started to pour In applications. Moat or these have stuck right on the Job. They have been careful, efficient, steady, reliable and, in many coses, better at work requiring delloate workmanship than men. No huovy labor Is at tempted. .The chief work which the woman do Is on primers, time fuses, In assembling, Inspecting, sorting and pocking. On some of these opera tions measurements to the thous andth part or an Inch are required. The women are paid from $10 to 22 a week Just as much as lualo workers In similar places. The plants where they work are airy and well lighted. In some places the Y. W, C, A. and W. C. T. U. and otfier organi zations hare started 'buffets where meals served at reasonable prices. uttrten is too main nutritive element In all flour made from grain, though It exists In larger proportion la soma va rieties of Wheat than In others, and In hard wheat more than In soft.
