Nerve and fighting spirit have carried the Bos ton Rod Sox, champions of the 'base ball world, out of danger for the mo ment in the American league race. By their gritty feat of winning two games in a row from the Tigers, and eliminating the Detroit menace from a chance for first place honors for today, the champions are now two full games ahead of Mie field and go ing strong. In the meantime the National league's "merry trl-cornered whirl" for the pennant grew tighter through the fea't of Al Detnaree In winning two contests In a single afternoon for the Phillies. The Utter club now is In a fair way to challenge the claim of the Dodgers to ownership of this year's Tener pennant. r The Red 6ox performed quite a little stunt when they pulled the blocks from under the Tigers In the socond game of their series yesterday. The skids were so well greased that the Tigers did not end their slide until they had landed In third place and where they now are planted half a game behind the White Sox, who were mauling the Athletics while the Red Sox were smashing the Tigers' defense. If the Red Sox are now unseated from the pinnacle position, the club that upsets them is entitled to all the honors It can get. The champions pounded out a victory over the Tigers yeBterday after they had got away to a poor start. Three runs were star ing them In the face before they fair ly realized what was happening, but they had the nerve and they won. The Tigers may win the game still left in the series, but It dons not mut ter a great deal. The Red Sox still will be In first place and will open In Cleveland In that position. lAfter the Cleveland series they will go home, and then Jack Barry prob ably will be back In the line-up. The chance seems to have slipped out of j Detroit's grasp. Only a remarkable recovery by the Tigers and a series lot bumps for the Red Sox can pre sent Bill Carrlgan again leading his cnarges to a woria s series. The Dodgers find themselves chal lenged by the pestering Phillies again today. The Phillies are now only a game and a half In the rear. The Braves slipped when they were step ped on with humiliating force by the last-place Reds. Today the Cardinals and Dodgers again will meet, and the Phillies are carded for another session with the Pirates. The Braves must meet those presuming Reds again and win, to keep within hailing distance. LYNCHING AUTOMATICALLY MAKES CORONER SHERIFF Topeka, Kas., Sept. 21. L. H. 'Lathrop, coroner, automatically be Jcame sheriff of Johnson county to 'day, following the lynching of Bert Dudley, convicted slayer of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mueller by 60 enraged Kansans this morning. It is provided by the Kansas law that when , a lynching occurs In a '; Kansas sheriff's territory, the coro ner automatically becomes sheriff. At the end of 10 days' suspension a hearing is held before the governor and the deposed shorlff may or may nt be reinstated by the governor. E. C. ANIMALS FEED ON SOLDIERS CORPSES London, Sopt. 21. Jackals and hyenas, creeping down from the mountains along the Sorbo-Greek frontier, are-feasting on the bodies of Bulgarian and Serbian soldiers slain In fierce fighting northeast of Lake Ostrovo. Three hundred Bulgarian corpses, pllod In a heap In ono ravine, were stripped of tholr flesh 1iy Jackals and hyenas at night, and by thousands of crows and vultures that hovered over the fighting ground In the day time. The dead Bulgarians had been mowed down In a machine gun attack and lay between the Serbian and Bul garian lines. "When tho Serbs ad vanced they found only skelotons and bits of torn uniforms. Cooler weather Is, aiding In the operations along' the Balkan front, and Is partly accountable for the furi ous fighting now going on between Serbs and Bulgars. Late la August, whon the allies first began hammering the Bulgarian lines, the heat In the day time was so Intense that even British and French troops hardened at Galllpoll suffered, and a large part or the fighting was done at night. In tho recent operations the Serbs have been attacking day and night, with battles going on for 48 hours without cessation. The Bulgars are still cllnmlnir to 'stretches of Greek territory on the !loft wing of the allies, though they have evacuated VlgllUa, In extreme northwestern Macedonia.
