Earlier In the day the graves of the veterans who had gone before, and who now reeled In local ceme teries, wero covered with flowers. BUSINESS STOPS AS TRIBUTE TO J. J. HILL St. Paul, May 81. Time stood still for five minute today (from St. Paul to the Pacific, out of deference to the memory of James J. Hill, the "em plre builder," who died May 29 fol lowing a surgical operation. The funeral eervicee were con ducted with tbe utmost simplicity. There were no -flowers. At 1:59 p. m., Just tefore the rites com menced, every factory whistle In. St Paul sounded for sixty seconds. Then a tbey ceaewd, business all over the city halted. And on every Hill rail road the trains stopped. The en gines of Hill liners at sea quit their pounding. For five mlnutea this silent tribute to the man who did ao much to build up the northwest don- tinned. . Governor Hanna, In asking North Dakota to stop its activities from S to 4 p. m eald: "North Dakota lost 1U beet friend In Jamea J. Hill." St. Paul'a schools and the state capMol are closed. In response to official order, flags throughout Minnesota flew at half-maat, the most signal honor ever paid a private cltl xen. Although the services were private, all mourners had opportunity to view the remains yesterday when they lay In state in a plain black casket In the drawing room of Hill's residence. High railroad officials, section hands, the poor and the rich walked silently past tli body for hours, many gray haired men who knew the deceased aa "Jim" Hilt weeping as they took their last farewells. Rev. Thomas Gibbons, vicar general of the Catholic diocese of St. Paul, who waa Hill's spiritual ad viser during his last hours, officiated at the funeral. Portland, May 81.
