TO TEDDY'S TALK
Charlotte, N. C, May 30. "Un-

Wilson's reply today to Colonel
Roosevelt demand tor "American
Ism."
He launched thta phrase at the
celebration of the one hundred and
forty-first anniversary ot the strains
ot the Mecklenburg Declaration ot
Independence, before a tremendous
crowd.
"What kind ot a fire are you going
to keep under the melting pot of
America la order to turn out un
tainted Americanism?" asked Wil
son. "There were oniy s.qoq.uqq
people In the United States when the
Mecklenburg declaration waa made.
There are a hundred million now, but
the same elements are present.. The
United States haa always been In the
process of being made. There are
always the same elements, the same
high passion tor human liberty. The
country has devoted practically all Its
attention for the past years to the
material aide ot life.
"It Is now more important to de
termine what to do with our power.
What are the great elements which
brought about the world's cataclyms?
It is competition ot standard national
traditions and national policies. The
melting pot Is the whole worldThere
Is plenty ot room for co-operation
and co-ordination of Interests. The
war brings to the fore the necessity
of getting together and taking coun
sel.
"The world outside la now asking
America, what are you going to do
with your power? Are you going to
transform It Into force ot peace and
good for the rest of society? Isnt
it a sign of a new age that the world
is about to fall back on the moral
judgment ot mankind?"
It was estimated that 40,000 were
present at the celebration. The gov
ernors ot North and South Carolina
and of Virginia were present. A dele
gation of southern beauties greeted
the "presldentess."
