The annual meeting of the State Association of Rural Letter Carrieri of Oregon met at the court house in Albany on the 29th and 30th of May. Nearly 100 carriers from dif ferent parts of the state were in at tendance on the 30th. Addresses were delivered by the postmasters cimVUti.Q-y:vk"h izi Orvais, and by Tom Richardson of the Port land ;Commercial Club, J. II. Har tog of the Kugeue Commercial Club, Ii. I. Dasent of the Albany Commercial Club, E. Hofer of the Salem Journal, J. II. Scott, county judge of Marion county; Mr. Stew art, county judge of Linn county; K. C. Clement, postal inspector, ami several others. Papers were read by carriers on various subjects which directly concern them Washington county was signally honored by the election of W. II Jioyd of IJeaverton as president for the coniin? vear. J. II. Coins of Albany was re elected secretary and treasurer, If. M. Cummins of Cor vallis, 1st vice-president; F. Krax berger of Aurora, and vice-president. J. II. Coins was elected to attend tne meeting of the national association, which meets in Omaha, Neb in October. Invitations were received from Fngene, Corvallis, Salem and In. dependence to meet in each, respee tively, in 1909. After due delibera tion Corvallis was chosen. The principal part of the time of the ses sion was devoted to discussions of ways and means to secure better rouds and of some way to bring the matter lfore the state legislature. Resolutions were also adopted re questing our delegate in the national association to favor resolutions for more pay and also for the establish metit of an insurance within the ranks modeled alter the railway mail clerks insurance association Returns on the state election, while vet incomplete, indicate that Governor Chamberlain has carried the state lor United States senator by a majority of at least 1000. Chamberlain has been successful in 14 out of the 33 counties, as fol lows: Haker, Clackamas, Clatsop, Crook, Douglas, Jackson, Jose phine, Lincoln, Linn, Malheur. Marion, Multnomah, Polk and Un ion, and probably in Lake. Mr. Cake has carried the remain ing 13 counties, but his average pluralities are much smaller than his opponent's. The largest mar gin given by any county for the rej publican candidate was 500 in Lane, where the unpopular action of the democratic governor in vetoing the state university appropriation had a great influence on the voters. Cake's smallest plurality was 18 in Kenton. The county ot Baker, which the Portland republican can didate for senator carried by a large plurality in the primaries, reversed its friendly attitude toward him and gave his rival more than 300. The same result occurred in Clackamas. The eastern Oregon counties, how ever, as a rule, although they were for Fulton in the primaries, gave the republican candidate plurali ties although they were small in nearly every instance. Umatilla, however, which is the home of Sen ator Fulton's strongest friends, roll ed up over 300 for the man who lcat him in April. Wasco, which was yesterday thought to have gone lor cuamberiain, comes through finally with a small plural ity lor Cake. l.overnor Chamberlain had the unexpectedly large plurality of 500 in Clackamas, the home of State ment No. 1, but In Clatsop, the residence of Senator Fulton, where the democratic nominee relied on a plurality of from 500 to 1000, he had only 300. It is not denied, however, that many of Senator Ful ton s Astoria triends vigorously kntled the Portlaud republican no mince, hut the results of their .1 ... i.uiKuicr were not so serious to hi m as they might have been in view of the fact that the large fish ing contingent in the lower river town was hostile to the democratic governor, and declined to support nun. In Crook county, the home of ex Representative Williamson, a warm friend and supporter of the Astori.i senator, the democratic nominee had a decided plurality. Linn, the old home of the govern or, gave hmi more than 400. In Marion the margin is very close, practically complete returns, how ever, showing a democratic lead of about 100. In Multnomah the ear ly expectations that Governor Chatntierljin would have from ijoo to 1300 are not borne out by the later returns.
