Hillsboro Independent. D. W. BATH. Editor and Prcirietor. WOMEN'S SUFFRACC Mossback Journalism. Monday's Telefrram-The elee firm nf n nrHsiilent of the Port' ian-1 Commercial Club will "be hM in due time. Mr. Hodson may be induced to serve another year. .Tournal-C. W. Hod son was elected president of the Portland Commercial Club at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Two brief little paragraphs, but sufficient to show the con trast between the news service of the two papers. In the same issue of the Telegram in which Mr. Hotlson's election was pre dicted, (after he had already been elected,) a large space on the front page was given to the production of a binfpOocu-o-"C funnv cartoon in which the court try editor was made the butt of the old cordwood-on-suDScripuun gag. At the very moment the sleepy old sheet was attempting to poke fun at newspapers of the countrv towns, it was being "scooped" right at home by a wide-awake competitor. One pa per was attending to its own business and printing the news; the other was making a cheap at tempt to belittle the business of ihn interior newsnaners, ana thereby overlooking an interest imr item right at its own door. The mossback journalism of Ore gon is not to be found in the countrv towns. It is confined to the odice of the Oregonian's ver miform appendix. Polk Co. Ob server. raaman Williams. On TWsdav evening at seven o'clock. January 21. 11)08, at the Methodist Episcopal church, Ka Wash.. Mr. John Isaiah Kggman and Miss Kebecca Wil liams were united in marriage in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, Elder (I. A. Lnnden of Tacoma, Wash., performing the ceremony, assist ed by Rev. Ellicott, pastor of the church here. The back of the altar was banked with ever greens, ferns and calla lilies, im mediately in front of this was a great white bell undenneath which the couple stood as they were pronounced man and wife. The bride is from Kentucky and is a daughter of Jamea R. Williams, a descendant of one of the oldest pioneer settlers oi tne state and she is a popular and highly esteemed young lady of this place. The groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Frances Eggman. He is well-liked, has high ambi tions and is of good habits. He is a successful business man of this vicinitv. having been engag ed in the timber business for a number of years and is also a graduate of the College ot my ography of Palo Alto, California. The above is taken from the Skamokawa, Wash., Eagle, and refers to a sister of Mrs. T.J. Allen of Peaverton, who with Mr, Allen attended the wedding. The bride was presented with a town lot, a gift from her cousin, Judge Saulsberry of Seattle. Hank FoolUhneRB. The vear 1007 has been a signi- and has brought them more of political free dom than most persons realize. Norway granted full Parliamen tary suffrage to women. Sweden made women eligible to municipal offices. TVnmark eave women the right to vote for members of the Board of Public Charities and made tliem eligible to serve on such Board r.rnt Britain made women eligi ble as town councilors, mayors and aldermen, and at the fall elections three women were elected munici pal councilors in England and one in Scotland. The Cabinet H,"r of the Netherlands drafted a revised con stitution which was approved by the Council ot State and has been placed before Parliament; it pro vides for the ballot for" women and makes them eligible to office. The Young Liberal Party of Ba varia acted unanimously to invite women to join all its branch socie ties as soon as the prospective change takes place in the law of the Empire, which forbids women to be members of any political as- sociation. Women voted for the first time in state elections in Queensland, Australia, and for the first time in history a majority of any disfran chised class petitioned for suffrage when the majority of adult women of Iceland asked for the Parliamen tary vote. Parliamentary suffrage war grant ed to Russian women on the same terms as to men except that the former must vote by proxy. In the United States, while there have been no such important speci fic gains, the civil status of women has been elevated in various states, women have been elected to boards of education in large numbers, and given other opportunities for great er service in our municipalities. The constitution of thenew state of Oklahoma provides tor school suffrage for women and made wom en eligible to one state office. The woman suffrage movement has been officially endorsedby the American Federation of Labor, the National Grange, the National Letter Car riers Association and by a score of other important bodies. At their annual meetings held last month, State Granges of New Jersey, Indiana, Delaware, Penn sylvania and Michigan passed wo man suffrage resolutions. The Ohio Grange, already on record as favoring full suffrage for women, adopted a resolution endorsing wo man suffrage in local option elec tions. California, Illinois, Ken tucky, Maine, Maryland, Minneso ta, New York, Oregon and Wash ington State Granges are others which have declared for equal suf frage, while the National Grange not only endorses it but recom mends its discussion in subordinate organizations. Brand Whitlock, independent mayor of Toledo, Ohio, and famous as an author, is reported by The News, of Detroit, as saying to May or Thompson of the latter city "Detroit, Cleveland and Toledo lead all other American cities in political freedom. But until wo men can vote it is only one half the freedom it should be. Do I believe m woman suffrage? Mast certain ly! We can only attain to a limit ed measure of political freedom when women are allowed to vote. The next step will be economic freedom." Sheriff's Sale.
