Illllsboro Independent. D. V. BATH. Editor and Proprietor, Prosecutor Heney has brought out no evidence in land fraud cases against Sonnor Fulton ' other than that he was mixed up in the ring with Mitchell and others, and if what he says is true, and Heney comes pretty near stating1 facts when making charges of corruption, it was cer tainly a dirty political crowd the senator was associating with. It is now up to the people to turn down the whole bunch and send to Washington men with clean hands and an earnest desire to work for Oregon's interest The Independent has always been republican, first, last and ail the time, and supported can didates of that party when we knew, and others knew, they were unfit candidates and not entitled to the support of the party they professed to represent From now on The Independent as its name implies, will be an in dependent republican paper, and will alwavs do what it can for the best interests of that party. We had rather work for a good democrat than a bad republican, and as there are plenty of good republicans to fill all positions of trust, it is foolish to thrust a man onto the party simply because he is, or says he is, a republican with an ax to grind and a lot of political debts to pay. J. Bourne, for instance. gentle and benevolent in interna tional affairs. What brings respect to a na tion from other nations is just strength-prepared strength and ability to use it when need comes. We had enough proof of this dur , th wr with Spain, in the comments of our European "friends," to last a century had we freed our minds from cant and looked the facts in the face. As we look back now the con flict with Spain does not seem to have been much of a war. ine republic, as it were, awkwardly put forth one hand. At the First Congregationa church in Portland last Tuesday, before the largest crowd ever in attendance in that building, Francis J. Heney, the govern ment's special prosecutor in the land fraud cases, paid his re spects to Senator Fulton, and gave his reasons for accusing the senator of unfitness for holding the high position he occupies. Among other things Mr. Heney said: That Charles W. Fulton was Senator Mitchell's sack-holder and distributor of funds during the legislature of 1897. That Fulton used his influence as state senator as attorney for the Astoria & Columbia River Kailroau and corporations, as United States senator to prevent enforcement of laws that he was sworn to uphold and to protect his friends from indictment and prosecution. That he bought votes outright during the "hold-up" legislature of 1J7. That in 1K99 he did his utmost to defeat justice and prevent en forcement of law by aiding and, abetting the land frauds as at torney for the Hammond lumber interests. That his connection with shady land deals continued after that time, particularly in 191)2. That he agreed with Senator Mitchell to shield Brownell from prosecution by the reappointment ot Hall as United States district attorney. That lie represents the inter ests of the railroads and biir cor- innations at Washington and not tnose ot the people. The Russian government has sent a high naval officer to ob serve the American fleet on its voyage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This fact marks the interest that the great fleet has aroused among the nations of the world. By many well-moaning persons the upbuilding of the navy in general and the sailing of this fleet in particular is continually deplored. Not thus, they say, not by such displays of "brute strength," do we win and keep tne respect oi tne nations or prove our "civilization." The plain truth is that no na tion wins the respect of others by being energetic and success ful in industry or by heaping up wealth which they will use as a livery sta ble, auto garage and blacksmith shop. The building will be made of first-class lumber and will be painted and will no doubt present a very neat appearance. A paper is being circulated for the purpose of raising money with which to build a board sidewalk across Fanno creek, commencing at the corner of the E. G. Ruedy I Jbuergi, Merrick and Burnbam tracts and running along the west side of the Taylor Bridge road in a southwesterly direction for a dis tance ot 500 feet It's up to the public now to do their share and Rive this project a much-needed boost. Tigardville is beginning to have some visitors since we have the electric railway, as not less than twenty six persons got ofl the car last Sunday morning at our station and in the evening forty eight per son took the car for Portland which is going some.
