lllllsboro Iiuleiiciiflcnt. D. W. EATH. Editor awl Proprietor! Onion Rate Raised The reply ol the Southern Paci fic Railway company iu the onion shippers case haa bceu filed with the state railway commission through its attorneys.- K. A. Lciter and V. D. Fentoii. The company claims that with one exception the increase was ouly on shipments less than ono car load, and were justi fied by the greater expanse tieces sarv in handling freieht in small quantities. The old rates were the same for all ouantities. and were figured on the cost of moving onions on the carload basis, so that small shipments were handled at an ac tual loss. The following changes were maue on quantities less than one carload shipped torortland, figured in cents per too pounds: New rate. 11 13 1 Old rate. 6 x 7 7 I'lace. Distance. Beavertou 11 HilUboro 1M Tualatin 13 Hherwood 17 7 13 These changes came into effect January i, 1907. The exception noted above was the change in car load rates from Beaverton, which was raised from 5 to 7 cents per 100 pounds. The company claim that they had lowered their rates to meet team competition, which they were 110 longer able to do. Refeiring to the increase in rates on shipment of fertilizer, the com pany urge several incouveniences incidental to the shipment of this kind of friegbt, among w hich is the necessity of hauling the empty cars one way. Shocking. Dr. Frederick 'A. Cook, the noted explorer, was talking in New York about his idea of trying to reach the south pole with automobiles. "Polar exploring in automobiles seems a very radical innovation, al most as shocking as the innovation, doesn't it?" he said. "It seems al most as shocking as the innova tion that was employed one Sunday night upon a Brooklyn doctor. "The doctor was in church. He occupied a front pew. The church was crowded, the preacher preach ing eloquently; a perlect silence reigned. "But suddenly a mau dashed iu at the door. He held up his hand for the preacher to pause. Then he cried: "Is Dr. Henry Smith here?" "With all eyes centered upon him, Dr. Henry Smith rose slowy in his front seat and turned round. "What is wanted?" he said. He had the grave, weary air of a man who is almost overburdened with the responsibilities heaped upon him. "Are you Dr. Henry Smith?" "I am." " 'Well, doctor, I am Cache & Co.'s new collector. When will it be convenient for you to settle that little account ot theirs?" Seattle Post. The school children' gift nickles to the "Perry fund" did not pan out very large, M the idea was not popular. Had the contribution been lor some other purpose the children would bavt come i Iront and the amount realized been ten times greater. The following synopsis of Land and Mineral Decisions is furnished this of fice by Woodford V. Harlan, Land At torney, anbington, V. v., ana nnaer this head will be published from week to week decisions which may be of in terest to our readers : The time within which a claim must be perfected by purchase, when the fil ing when first offered is properly re jected on account of a defective town- hip plat ot survey, and is thereafter al lowed on correction of said plat, should be computed from the date when the corrected plot is filed and the land open ed to disposal. Unable to obtain men enough for the harvest fields many Wisconsin farmers have hired women in their f laces. Farmers were up a tree as to what to do, as crops were lgin- ning to ripen and no help could be obtained to hat vest them. Then one determined to try women. The experiment was so much of a sue cess that vthers followed suit, and now all young women who will take a job are quickly picked up They are said to do just as good work as former "farm hands," and A. 1 1 .... mere is ruuen less striking among them. The Limit Of Life. The most eminent medical scien tists are unanimous in the conolu sion that the generally accepted lim itation of human life is many year below the attainment possible with the advanced knowledge of which the race is now possessed. Th critical period, that determines it duration, seems to be twtween so and 60; the projicr care of the bod cannot be to strongly urged; care lessness then being fatal to longev ity.
