Don't Invest in Guayule Lands. The Mexican government is seek ing tbe aid of its American consuls to thwart the designs of scheming land agents in Mexico, who are ac cused of putting into effect a clever scheme to defraud foreign investors. It has recently oeen proven that the guayule, a wild . shrub native to Mexican soil, produces 10 per cent rubber, and this industry has grown to large proportions. Land agents in Mexico have taken advantage of the reputation of the guayale shrub and have sold to investors thou sands oi acres of land, which appar ently contained vast quantities of the- rubber-bearing plant. Above and beyond all, however, is the process ot restoration ot the land to its originality by the grow ing of leguminous crops and the presence of livestock on the field with its fertilizing influence. The alfalfa field nsed has never had a pound of commercial fertilizer on it, is ordinary wheat ground on the upland, and has been subjected to no treatment that is not easily pos sible on any Western Oregon farm. Some people are iuclined to believe that intuition will teach a mother how to take care ot her child, notwith standing the overwhelming amount ot fact to the contrary. The baby animal is cared fur by its animal mother, but the doctor thinks the human mother, without education in the matter, is not as able as the animal to care for her young, He is not very fond of the grand mother, either, who spoils children. The sen tencing of Mayor Eugene Scbuiiu to five years in San IJueutin peni tentiary for extortion was one of the moat dramatic scenes ever wit nessed in a Western court. The effectiveness of the fearful denunci ation 01 tne convicted mayor, as delivered by Superior Judge Frank M. Dunne prior to the passing of judgement, was heightened by the demeanor of the prisoner, who time and again interrupted the court to demand that those "humiliating re marks" be desisted from and that ' the court do its duty by pronoun cing sentence at once. , Once, while the sentence impend ed, the Judge threatened to send Mr. Metcalf, of the mayor's counsel, to jail for contempt because he de scried the oourt's comments as "cruel and unusual punishment," and Mr. Metcalf was told by Judge Dunne that he ought to be "begging a day in court to defend himself against the charge of having tam pered with a witness in the case." The defense filed a bill of excep tions after motion for a new trial and motion for the arrest of judg ment bad been denied and Judge Dunne granted a certificate ol pro bable cause, upon which Schmitz will go to the district court of ap peals for a new trial. COURTROOM RINGS WITH CHEERS. As the last words of the sentence fell from he Judge's lips, the great crowd that had stood throughout the dramatic scene, sent up a thun derous cheer.' "Good for you," snouted a man in the back of the room. His ejaculation was echoed and re-echoed by one after another of the spectators. Several threw their hats into the air. Others scrambled upon chairs to look over the shoul ders of the crowd. The greatest confusion prevailed. The Weather. Very favorable temperatures pre vailed during the week. In the northwestern counties it was about two degrees warmer than usual, and in ,the southern and eastern counties the temperature was near ly normal.
