Houser & Otis P. R. Dailoy's Old Stand Rooaerelt for Equal Right. Prenldsot Roosevelt must be pleased by the ptui( of a woman's suffrage bill in the styiate of bis bom state. When Governor of New York he spread great consternation among the moss backs by recommending woiuan'a suf frag In bit inaugural menage to the legislature. It got wind that be meant to do to, and all manner of pressure was brougbt to bear upon him against it by representatives of tbe great corporations and by "society" women ; but Teddy's sturdy backbone did not weaken. Tbe conservatives prophesied tbift no New York Legislature would ever follow bis advice. But only a few years have passed, and already the legislature is lining up with Roosevelt. Facta for Voter. A number of big corporations and bus Iness men say they believe that equal suffrage would hurt tbe development of Oregon. The United .States census shows that all the states where women rote have grown rapidly in population, agriculture and manufactures. The fol lowing cold facts are submitted to the common sense of Oregon voters : According to the last census, in the past ten years population increased 30 per cent in Colorado, 32 per cent, in Utah, t'J per cent in Wyoming, and 88 per cent in Idaho. In Oregon it in creased only 30 per cent. The value of manufactures increased 82 per cent in Wyoming, 137 per cent in Utah, 142 per cent in Colorado, and 187 percent in Idaho. In Oregon it in creased only 11 per cent. Tbe value of farm property increased 151 per cent in Colorado, 237 per cent in Utah, 36U per cent in Idaho and 431 per cent in Wyoming. In Oregon it in creased only 100 per cent. According to the last census, the aver age earnings of men engaged in farm and factory work were (512.21 per year in Utah, 1583.68 In Idaho, l(U2.ftl in Colo rado, and $18.54 in Wyoming. In Oregon they were only $483.59. During the last ten years, according to the census, the value of manufactures increased $8 for each person in Idaho and Wyoming, $34 for each person in Utah, and $87 for each person in Colo rado. It fell off $20 for each person in Oregon. These figures prove clearly that equal suffrage does not hurt a state's develop ment. The protest of the big corporations merely shows their opposition to any thing that will increase the power of the plain people. Many of the corporations tbat signed are all controlled by a few persons. In these cases half a dozen separate signatures represent only so many different tentacles of one and the same big octopus. The initiative and referendum are the chief defense of the people's rights. It is worthy of note that the three rich society women who asked tbe corpora' tions to protest, spoke against the initi alive and referendum in their circular letter. The Federated Trades Council of Tort land has Just passed unanimously a res olution offered by the women of the Garment Worker's Union, endorsing the equal suffrage amendment, and call ing attention to the fact that the great corporations which are the enemies of the people are also the enemies of jus tic to women.
