The debating council bat aubmitted the following name, to the University of Washington from which to select three judge, for the Washington-Pacific de bate to be held at Pacific University in March : A. W. Fenton, Portland ; May or Harry Lane, M. S. Pipe, Prof. II. II Herdman, Judge W. B. Gilbert, M. U. George, all of Portland ; Prof. W. C Hawley of Salem, and 8. B. Huston of Hillsboro. That the street railway at Forest Grove is sure tlamr. there can be no doubt, a. ft franchise for that purpose ha. passed the city council, and the c ninty court at ita session last week granted the company permission to use the streets over which the line must run outside the city limit. The electric road will run from the depot up town, a distance of about ft mile and a half. The franchise was granted to ft corporation headed by Hon. E. W. Haines, and work must begin within ninety days and the line be in operation within eight month. Work will begin at once, it is said. Suit ha been commenced against W B. Cate by The Anchor Fence Co. to force payment of $287.04 claimed to be due for wire. Suit has also been filed against W. B. A C. C. Cate by the Steph en Co. of Portland, for $415.76, and by II. L. Hartrampf of thia city for $303.83, for good alleged to have been sold to Cate A Son. The store was taken pot session of by Sheriff Connell last Fri day and haa remained closed since then. Just how badly Cate A Son are involved is not know, but according to report, it is not at all likely they will resume busi- nebs right away. The member, of the G. A. R. and W R. C, held in this city last Saturday, was present an old lo'.dier'i widow from Coshocton,' Ohio, .inter of John M Simpson of South Tualatin, who is hon ored a. tew ever are. This lady . name it Mr. P. S. Wright, and her grand father, Thomas Simpson, whose home in New Hampshire, near Boston, was a soldier in tbe war of 1776, and her father, also of New Hampshire, carried arm in the struggle of 1812; her young est brother waa private in the Fourth Michigan cavalrv in the dark day ot lHtil ; her husband's father waa a drum major under Gen. Harrison in 1812; her husband, the Rey. John Wright, late ot Coshocton, was a soldier in the Fourth Michigan cavalry ; three of his brothers were in the conflict of 1MI-5; her brother', eon, Earl Simpson, was in the Spanish war; her youngest son. Her bert Wright, wa. with Dewey at Cavltte, and two grandson, are in Cut and the Philippine Island.. Mr. Wright i. of I sunny, genial temperament and always looks on the bright side ot life. She haa been here since last May visiting her brother, John M. The county commissioner met in reg ular monthly session this 3rd day of Jan uary, l!M, with L. A. Rood, judge, and W. T. Butuer and C. B. Buchanan, com missioners, present. Following are the proceedings in full : The petition of A. J. lies for public easement, report of viewers and sur veyors approved and no objections hay- ng been filed, it is ordered that said re port be approved, that tbe road of pub lic easement be established as per plat and survey, and that the petitioner, A. Hess, be required to pay to the coun ty clerk the aiuount ot damage and the ost of viewing and surveying said road. Petition of H. Wehrung for the vaca tion of blocks and lots in South Coast addition to Hillsboro received, and no objection haviug been filed or made, It i ordered that said lot and block be vacated. Petition of H. H. Davie et al for the location of county road received and approved ; that the road be established aa per plat aud survey; that the old road be vacated, No. 421. The clerk will issue order to open and draw war rants in favor of viewer. Petition of I. C. Clutter et al for th location of county road read first, second and third times, and it appearing that petition does not give the county juris diction, it ia therefore ordered that tbe cause be dismissed, expenses to be paid by the petitioner or bondsmen. In the matter ot the petition of C. A. Cavell et a's, for the location of a county road ; bond filed and approved ; order ed that the etition be received and ac tion thereon continued. In the matter of levying taxes for 1906 on the tax roll of 19J5, it ia ordered that tax of 1 82-100 mill on a dollar be levied for tate tax, 1 73 100 for county fund, 3 42-100 for county school fund, 3 33 100 tor road fund, 0ti-100 for library fund, 04-100 mill for indigent fund; total levy, 10 40-100 mill on the dolli r Report of E.
