THE INDEPENDENT, HILLSBORO Official Paper of Washington County. Enteral M tho Potto fflco at Hills t)oro, Oregon, for transmission through tho malla aa aocondlaaa mail matter. Official Paper of Washington Coimtj. BY D. W. BATH A fire o( onknown origin oo oreJ in tli F. . Btach paint store, First anl Al.ler streets, Portland, at noon Wed nesday, causing a Ions o( 1 10,01)0. Sev eral ersona narrowly escai! death in the Haines. The president said to the people ol Frederick, Oklahoma, "I like my Job." That is alxjut as democratic as any thing ever attributed to Thomas Jeffer- Hamuel K. Eliot, of Portland, won the Rhodes scholarship from Missouri and he will commence his tuJi. tln-r in October. Ie is a son of Dr. T. L. Eliot, and is one of the class of 1SHX) of the 1'ortlund Academy. An annual allow ance of f l,.r)()0 goes with the scholarship. When the American Hoard ot Con gretional Foreigns Missions decided to accept the 1 100,000 contribution of Mr. Rockefeller, of Standard Oil "Notoriety, one indignant memlwrof the board arose and said the initials of the organisation hould be translated "Any lloodlcr Can Finance Me." Mabel fiunnon, a tl-year-old daughter of J. It. Iiannon, a plasterer fell from a trestle spanning Marijuain Gulch in South Portland Wednesday afternoon and struck on her head on cement and stones on the liottom, sixty-five feet lelow. Her skull waa crushed and death resulted almost instantly. The chilil, with her sister 4 years of age, was walking on the Southern Pacific track, which runs across the gulch, when she fell headlong to her death. Omaha dispatches bring the news that a stoed of forty miles an hour is easily attained and maintained by the new gasoline motor car which is to be used on the Southern Pacific Company's West Side line out of Portland. On this car the trip from Portland to Mc Minnvillo may le made in an hour and a quarter, It is not so long ago or at least the time is still easilf recalled by Mrsons yet comparatively young that to make the forty-five miles trip by rail from Portland to "St. Joe," then the terminus of the West Side line, required the greater part of a day. Telegram. Governor Mead of Washington has de cided to declare June I a public holiday in that state in honor of the opening of the lx;wig and Clark exposition at Port land. The proclamation waa requested by President J. II. Uoode, of the expo sition. Governor Mead has been an en thusiastic and consistent friend of the exposition, and is glad to take this means of atmiHting in what is to prove a great benefit to Washington aa well as to Oregon. The law allows the govern or to designate any day a public holi day. The formal proclamation will be issued soon. Japan is contemplating declaring war on France and calling on Great Britain for support. This action follows the sending of a formal protest to France against the use of the Baltic fleet of Kamranh llay as a rendezvous and the coupling therewith of a statemeut that if France refrained from acting Japan will send a fleet of war vessels to attack the Russians in the shelter of neutral )orta. 8chool Notes.
