How do you like The Independ ent In its new clothes ? Monday is the last day to reg ister. Republicans should remem ber that their vote will be needed. Register NOW. Hurst captured the Iowa demo cratic convention, but the scene was a warm and boisterous one, some of the orators being hissed and driven fiom the platform. The Eugene Register has just is sued its annual edition for 1904. It is a valuable record of the progress ol Kugene and Lane county, con taining many illustrations of rare historical interest. All over the state the question of local option is being discussed by able speakers, for and against the measure, and there is 110 denying the fact that the question will as sume importance before election flay. Hon. K. W. Haines, of Forest Grove, republican candidate for senator, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Haines is making a clean, honor able campaign and his election is a foregone conclusion. He will fill the jajsition in a manner cred itable to himself ami satisfactory to his district. Louisiana purchase exposition lion stamps are now on sale in St. Iyouis and many other cities. The 5c stamp liears the picture of Win. McKinley, the 10c stamp the map of the United States and the orig inal Louisiana territory, on the 2c stamp the head of Jefferson, and on the 3c stamp the picture of -Monroe. Fruit growers near Moiitavilla have grown sick of raising fruit for nothing and some forty or fifty have formed a syndicate and will try to get capital interest to the extent of putting in a fruit cannery. There are alove J50 acres of land in that vicinity producing raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and other fruit, and in past seasons much ol it has rotted on the vines. John I). Rockefeller, Jr., has re ceived much noteriety as being a millionaire leader ol a Iiible class in a New York City Sunday school. Hut for the interfeience of friends last Sunday he undoubtedly would have been the victim of a demented ex-preacher who forced his way into the class-room and insisted on speaking to Mr. Rockefeller. The actions of the man caused suspicion and he was searched, when a load etl revolver was found in his hip- jMfcket. State (lame Warden Maker til" Cottage (trove, was in McMiunville last Friday attending strictly to his official business, anil he is very well satisfied with his woik. As a re sult A. Fads paid a line of $25 and costs for having a deer in his pos session; (5. S. Mills was assessed the same ntnount for the same of fense; one Harrison put up 15 and costs for killing geese, and Web Wright make it all tight with the court by paying 5' 5 "ltd costs lor h iving a wild swan concealed alwuit hi person. There is lots of fun hunting, but the sport conic high at this season of the year. One of the smallest babies ever known by physicians to survive birth is struggling for life in an in cubator at the Deaconess hospital in St. I.ouis, and the ih.inces lor the infant liecoining a lusty child are excellent. The babe was plac ed immediately alter biith in one of the incubators of the Imperial con cession company and is now giving every indication of gaining victory over death. The infant is 1 1 inches long and wcighes but 2 pounds at d 7 ounces. Its arm is about the sie of the little linger of a man's hand and its head is not of gteator circumletence than an avctaee- sied orange. The question has lieen asked fie qnently whether the registry looks close on Satuiday the 1.1th or on Monday the iMh, The statutes provide that the last day on which voters may register is May 15th, but as that date falls on Sunday this year, thete is a difference ot opinion as to when the closing shall l The' county cleik of llcuton county applied to Attorney-General Crawford, asking him whether he should close his books on Satur day night or keep them open on Monday as a day of grace. He was informed by the attorney gen eral that ihe Inaiks should be dost d Saturday, The safest thing (or voters to do is to register NOW. Uvcry vote will be needed, and if you are not registered you cannot vote. A man named John Kckert, of Grangeville, Idaho, is a tender hearted man and under no circum stance would he cause unnecessary pain, but the next time he wants to send a worn out horse to the lane, of Nowhere he is either going t use an ax or adopt the old fashion ed shot gun method. A day two ago, wanting to get rid of a horse that was far alcng in the old maid series, he tied a stick of dy namite to the animal's neck, lit the fuse and started on a run for the woods. The horse, thinking his master was in a playful mood, fol lowed him as swiftly as his great age would permit, and when the explosion occurred they were neck and neck. The animal was scat tered over a good portion of the farm and Mr. Eckert found himself in the forks of a tree, pretty well battered, but still in the ring. The Columbia Register is the name of a new paper just started at Houlton, Columbia county, Or. It has the name of R. H. Mitchinell at masthead and the first issue shows that its editor understands his business and is capable of giving the peeple of Houlton a good pajer. Hut we ore sorry to note that ad vertisers in that neck of the Woods are not giving the paper the pat ronage it is entitled to. A town can't grow and prosper without the aid of its newspayers, be they re publican or democratic, anil it is the duty of every firm to give the paiiers a certain amount of adver tising. It is simply a business proposition which is of lieucfit to them and the town as well. Thi applies ns much to Illllsboro as it docs to Houlton. With this issue The Independent closes the 31st year of its existence What it has been in the past its readers already know and no coin nient on our part is necessary or would be appropriate at this time What concerns us and our patrons now is what will be its usefulness its prosjferity and growth in the future. We have endeavored to publish a good, clean, newsy paper and one that would be a welcomed visitor into any home. The work at times has been up hall and tedi ous, but we believe that during the short time we have owned and con trolled the publication many im provements have been made that our subscribers will notice and ap preciate. Today we send the paper out with a new dress new type bright and shining from the found cry, and it will be our earnest en deavor to keep the contents of its columns in as clean a manner. We have Ix-en to a good ileal of excuse to bring this office up to its present condition of excellence, as besides the new newspaper type, a large and extensive lot of job type am material has been added, which puts ns in position to do as good up-to-date printing as any country office in Oregon, and we solicit your patronage. The Independent it sound financially and jMlitically, and is here to stay, and the present management will stay with it, hoj ing to make new friends and a Ix t- ter pajuT as the weeks go bv. They'll Hav to Let Up. The St. I.ouis fair will not prove so very iopular after the people ol these free I'nited States find out that a price is set upon the very air they breathe in that locality. tin opening tiav me water was turned off at the Exposition ground: and no one could get a th ink tin lesshe coughed up a nickle, or went on me otnsme to get it. 1 111s was done, so it is said, to compel peo ple to buy leer or sola water at the nuiueious stands. A charge of 5 cents is made for toilet privileges, and every at move a man makes he must go down in his pickets for cash to feed the hungry hordes that .tie performing the blood -sucker act at an amaing rate. The press ol St. I.ouis denounces this iiuposi lion on visitors and ate free in ex prcsMiig the opinion that unless a stop is put to it, people will remain away fiotn the gteat Exposition, for no matter how good the fair is, no one likes to 1h bled, though they are perfectly willing to pay any reasonable sum for what they get. The same tactics were played at the Chicago World's Fair and it drove away many visitors. The management at St. I.ouis should take warning and coiujel the rob bers to stop the avcrice, which is Wing shown on every hand Many who anticipated a visit to the Extosition will not go, if a halt is not called, but will decide to le 1 main at home and wait for the Lfcwis and Clark fair in 1905.
