Yesterday mora lug an important strike was made In the heart of the city. For several days past workmen have been at worV Viiavatiug for it io-; "'iy brick build iug for the I.egg & Shaw company on lower Main street. On Sunday water seeped' through the ground, forming several small 'pools where the foundations will stand. One of the workmen was wash ing a shovel in a pool when, to bis surprise, he observed particles of gold clinging to the shovel. One of the owners was informed of the discovery w hereupon he procured a miner's pan, filled it. with dirt, and obtained 60 cents worth of the yellow metal. Sev eral other pans were washed from different spots with equally good re turns. At this rate it is estimated that the dirt which has been hauled away as valueless will bring 1200 a ton. Fully loo tons Is available, and if the ground holds good It should pan out $12,000, while the whole cost of working It will not exceed $1000. FOUND IN THE YUKON. Alaska Stream Gives Up Bodies Of Two Murdered Men. Seattle, Wash., Aug. 26. A Special from Dawson, dated yesterday, says: Peter Fournier'was arrested here chargedw 1th the murder of Leon Boutbillette and Joseph Beaudern. The police are looking for Fournier's partner, Labelle, and will almost sure ly catch him within a few days. tha amitioil men left White Horse. in company with the two who werej murdered, in a small boat last June. The bodies of Bouthillette and Beaud em were found in the Yukon river and identified. Bouthllette's body was perforated by three, bullets. The top of Beaudern's head was gone and a rope was attached to bia left wrist and ankle. Fournier and Labelle were boosters of Dawson gambling games. They left for .. hite Horse, but started back. Together with the dead men they bought a boat from a White Horse boatbuilder who identifies Fournier, and was with the detective when the arrest was made. Four hundred dol lars In Quebec bank notes was found on the prisoner. Bouthillette had $1100 in similar notes. All the parties are French Canadians. A NEW RAILROAD. Line Will be Built from Bakersfield to the Coast. Bakersfield, Cal., Aug. 26. At a meeting of producers held at the office of the Diamond Oil company at Sun set yesterday it was detirmlued to accept the offer made by the promot ers of the new line of railroad pro posed to be built from that district to the seaboard. The railroad peo ple ask for a guarantee of a dally shipment of 6000 barrels. Over 3000 barrels were signed for the Sunset and Midway, and it was the opinion that the balance would be made up-ln a short time. There Is to be a meeting of the board of trade this week to consider the matter from Bakersfield's stand point. A meeting of citizens doubt less will be called at an early date, as It is regarded as a fine opportunity to get an outlet to the coast on most favorablo terms. Sues the Pope for a Church Site. New tork, Aug. 26. Pope Leo XIII and John Doe have been co-defendants In an action brought against the Catholic church by Monroe Frank, and a lis pendens has been filed in the proceedings with the county clerk against the property occupied by St. Patrick's Cathedral. Monroe Frank, the plaintiff, Is an attorney, who declares that the valu able property on which the Catholic cathedral stands belongs to the Unit ed States government. Drowned In Sight of Friends. New York, Aug. 26. Henry R. Mill er of this city, assistant secretary of tho North American company, was drowned while bathing at Atlantic Highlands. N. J. An attack of heart failure while Miller was near shore caused his death 'in plain view of a score of his friends, Reoccupies Carupano. Wiliemstad, Island of Curacao, Aug. 26.' Details of the reoccuplation of the port of Carupano, state of Bermudese. Venezuela, by the Venezuelan govern ment forces, received here, show that Central Veiutlnia, with 6oo0 men from the Island of Margartt, reoccupied the port on Friday last without encounter ing any opposition from the Venezuel an insurgents. St. Paul, Minn., Aug. 26 A Win nipeg (Minn.) special to the Die patch says: Eight thousand harvest ers have arrived here since Saturday Of the number about 200 have gone to North Dakota and It Is said the alien labor law machinery may be set in motion. SPEAKS AT LYNM. His New England Trip a Series of Splendid. Ovations. Lynn, Mm., Aug. 26. Thousands came to Lynn yesterday from all the surrounding country to welcome Pres ident Roosevelt. From the city hall an elaborate display of bunting and flags showed well and In front a stand, tastefully trimmed, was In place, from which the pro.iduut spoke. William A. Wiley, president of the common council, met the president and his party as they came from Na hant at the boundary line of Lynn. Fully 150,000 people lined the way and the cheera resounded continually. The cheerlna broke afresh as the president mounted the speakers' stand. h!s address was brief and at its con clusion he was escorted to the rail road station to take the train for Boa ton. At Senator Lodge's Home. Nahant. Mass.. Aug. 26. President Roosevelt enjoyed an undisturbed night of rest at the residence of Sen. ator Lodxe and in tho morning he arose as fresh as when his New Eng land trip began. COLOMBIAN REINFORCEMENTS. Colon Garrison Will be Strengthened Without Delay. Colon. Colombia. Aug. 26. The firat batch of Isthmian reinforcements, numbering 600 men, which arrived here Sunday from Savanllla on board the BrltUh Bteamer Bernard Hall, con sisted of three battalions of Santander troops under the command of Oeneral Rafael Rodriguez. Oeneral Gonzales Valencia, commander-in-chief of the army of the interior, is expected to ar rive at the isthmus with the next re inforcements. The reinforcements of Sunday camped on Monkey Hill, a mile distant from Colon. They are destined to strengthen the garrison of Colon. The British cruiser Phaeton arrived at Panama Saturday from Buena ven tdra, where she went to protect Brit ish 'interests as the result of the Co lombian government's action in at tempting to compel the British steam er Ecuador, belonging to the Pacific Navigation company of Liverpool, to carry Colombian troops to Panama. The Colombian gunboat Oeneral Pizon has arrived at Colon with a few troops "and some cattle. New Yorker Leases Battle Abbey. New York, Aug. 26. Battle Abbey, the historic pile which marcs the spot where Harold V. surrounded by bis Saxons, fell in the battle with Wil liam the Ccloueror at the battle of Hastings, has been leased for a term of years to Michael P. Grace, brother of former Mayor William R. Grace. Grace will use the abbey as a winter residence. For a long time Grace has leased Lord Howe's estate In Hert ford 3hlro for his winter home. Battle Abbey, which belonged to the late Ducness of Cleveland, widow of the fouith and last Duke of Cleve land and mother of Lord Rosebery, was sold at auction last autumn to Sir Augustus Frederick Walpole Webs ter, a descendant of Sir Thomas Webster, who bought the abbey from the sixth Viscount Montague In 1718, and in wnose family the abbey re mained for 130 years. The purchase price was the equivalent of $1,000,000. King and Queen are 8ailing. Loudon, Aug. 26. The- king and queen are slowly sailing north in the royal yacht, and are expected to land at Aberdeem at the end of the week. Thence they will proceed by special train to Ballatar for Balmoral. The duration of their stay in Scotland is yet undecided. Much Will depend on the nature of the weather.' Iu all probability they will go for another yachting trip next month from Aber deen to Copenhagen, to pay a visit to the king of Denmark and to meet the emperor of Russia. South Dakota Bank Robbed. Aberdeen, S. D., Aug. 26. The First National bank was robbed of $3800 In silver Sunday night. The robbers en tered tue basement, thence going up stairs. Since then, however. there have been discoveries of oil ttelds which have enormously In creased tlio supply available for all purposes. The government report on the sub. lect shows that the total output of petroleum for the whole world in 1900 was 15o,000,000 barrela. The production iu I Ills country for tbe same year was 63,000,000 barrels, but in l'JOI, as the result ot the explolta tiou of Ihe Texas oil fields, the out put increased to 720,000,000 barrels, or more than live times the total out put of the world for the previous year. There seems to have been an enormous iuerease also in the world's output. There are now at least 200 wells iu Texas ulone, which up to a recent date have developed a capacity of from 00,000 to 100,000 barrels a d y. It is estimated that about 2,000,000, 000 gallons a year come from the Texas oil ' fields alone. The Texas "gushers" are reported lo be subsid ing and the oil ultimately must be drawn out by pumping.- Allowing for this, it is evident to the naval ex perls who navei looked Into the sub ject that Ihe wells t-f Texas, Californ ia, Borneo and Burmab, the four new fields, will yield enough oil to render possible the general use of liquid fuel in the steamships of the world. Tbe navy department Is awaiting the report of Lieul. Ward Wiui-hell, who accompanied Ihe steamer Atari, posa, which has been fitted recently with appliance for burning oil fuel, on her I rip from Ban Francisco to the Society islands ai.d return. Lieut. Winchell was instructed to obtain all pesalblo information con cerning Ihe installation aud opera tion of the oil burnlngdevices aboard tbe-Mariposa. lie will report in do tail upon every feature. This is regarded as a menace to Ihe national entity of the dominion, and accord ingly an effort is being put forth- to stir up the public mind upon the sub- ject with a view of Laving Green om day in tbe near future made Canadian territory by par hast, It Is argued that because Green laud is a comparatively unprofitable aud useless country fur the United States or any other country lo pos sess, it is no reason why Canada should fear its becoraiug incorporat ed into the Amerlcau union. It is pointed out in this conneutiou that Alaska at one time stood upon about the same fouling, but Its acquisition is regarded as a atauding menace to British interests aud an important step toward the ultimate absorptiou of British North America- by the United States. In a similar sense, it is claimed, uiip.ht the argument apply to tbe purchase of Greenland by the United States, Ibe' moral ef fect of the possession of that territory would be very valuable to a possible American policy looking to the an nexation of Canada and would wok incalculable mischief to the loyalty of the coming generation of Can adians. We presume (hat Greenland is emanci pated by its insularity from the Mon roe doctrine, aud it seems time that we saw to it that it should fall into no other hands than those of Great Britain. It does not look like a very valuable possession; neither did Alaska, when it was bought; but it might easily become so. At all events, its possession by Canada, should it ever become a part of our federation-would have an expand ing iufluence on our national mlod.
