GAULT, JhlUur. ; FRIDAY, FEUJiUAHV H, 1902. REPUBLICAN STATE COJVVEA' TIQX. The BUta Central Committee of the republican party , met in Port land iaat Saturday. Every county waa represented by ltd committee. man or his proxy, except Yamhill and Lincoln. There were vacanaie in Cooue and Curry, the oomnitttee man in one having died and the other having removed. The epre aeutatlon wan haaed on the vote cast for president in 1900. One delegate at large from each county and one for every 160 votes cast for Prr ildeut McKlnley, and one for each fraction over one-half of ISO. Washington county will be eatliled to twelve delegated. Thin in a loan of one from what waa mot last year, but we are not the only county that lot. Mult nomah gives up three. The conven tion will be composed of 843 dole- gates. In 1900 It contained 335. The meeting will take place in Portland, April 2d. The congressional con vention for the second district will meet in Portland, April 1st. The convention for the first district has not yat been called, though Dr. Har ris, of Eugene, has asked his, corn ralttee to meet in Portland next week to fix a time and place. Rose , burg has been mentioned as a proper plice, and that city may be selected. It will be expensive for the dolegates from this part of the state, but then the delegates from the south have been paying liberal assessments in the shape of railroad fares, and it Is no more than just that thoy be al lowed a respite this time, It is amusing to read how the European nations nre running to cover that the cordial friendship with the United States may be maintain ed. Some days ago It was revealed in the English parliament that in 1898, when that government was ap proached by the other powers with a proposition to Interfere between the United States and Spaio, England said "No." Prompt denials came from Russia, France and Germany All the mischief-making Is laid to Austria. Germany acted a little queer in Manila Bay and now prob ably feels that something more should be said. The official German papers loudly deny that there was thought of hindering the freehand of the United States In 1898. In ad ditlon to this denial, the papers seem anxious to swear to it. Those Euro pean powers may not feel that it is good thing to have our friendship. but they probably see that it is bad thing to have our ill will. Buy your cigars and tribacix) o.' Ia going over the famous "Shasta Route" of the Southern Pacific Co. the travoler ever finds something new to excte bis admiration and Interest. Starting at Portland, one traverses the whole length of the Willamette Valley, the gem of the Northwest. Mt. Hood, Mt. Jeffer son, and the Three Sisters and Other snow-capped peaks are kept in sight for hours. The beautiful valleys of the Umpqua and Rogue rivers, with their orchards of prunes, peaches, apples and other fruits are a delight In thnmseltes. The crossing of the great mountain barrier between Cat Iforola and Oregon reveals the grand est mono tain scenery in the United Slates. Tha wonderful turnings, twlntlngs and doublings of the rail road bring Into view a grand amy ot towering mountains and profound gorges into which we gaze from dizzy heights, forest clad mountain Blopps stretching up to the line of perpetual snow, and the foaming mountain streams dashing fiercely down deep canyons, now and then stopping tor a short rest in some quiet pool. After a days enjoyment of old Mt. Shasta, the finest peak on the continent, we drop rapidly down the canyon of the Sacramento to the broad plains of the Sacramento Val ley In California, and thence through vineyards and orchards to San Fran cisco. Ho could not see the stars and would have to trust to luck. So ho swung himself over tho dirido and rushed down tho slopes. Another range to climb, and still it snowed, and Inter tho wind rose and tossed the snow aloft in great pcctral wraiths that looked to his distorted vimon liko shroud But that wnrm bundle so cloc to hia heart gave him courage, and he pushed on. Fivo hours ho had been traveling Bteadily. IIo could not remember how many rnnges he had paused. He had forgotten how many ranges he was to cross to reach the town. He mado some descents that equaled the famous race course, narrowly es caping trees and rooks, holding one arm about the bundle, patting it as no nesrd htiul encs. Again ho was caught in an avalanche, reaching the bottom waist deep in snow, the baby almost buried. It was now daylight, ana alter digging his leet ont he un rolled tho bundle and, protecting it, gavo the baby a ration of the milk, which had kept warm against his body. It looked wondcringly at him tho while, and Ueorge, who know very little about babies, made tip his mind that it muct be a very good naturea one. Ho did not realize how wcurv he was nntil he started wp again. Then ne round that his foot hnd boon twisted and he was lnme. The cold was increasing, tho snow was finer and filled his eyes, nnd he felt that this was the beginning of tho end. But on he prensed until tho after noon, when the baby cried, and he stopped to give it the remainder of tho milk, looking at the little face with rod and dtierate eyes. On he went again, now running, now limn ing, plunging down the sloped nntil ho began to experience a strange oppression, ns though a hand of iron was about his head. Then he seem- ed to be at home, and he tried to sk his mother to take the babv. lie suddenly stopped, trembling, realiz ing that his mind was not clonr, and dashed snow upon hi9 forehead fin t it ... men ne rusnen on again IlKe a madman. How far he went no one knows to this day, but it had been manv miles in the wrong direction, when, with a wild laugh, which frightened those who heard it, Long Barton unslung bundle and plunged into a half buried wickiup, from the top of which sparks were rising. The men reached for their firearms at sight of tho gigantic and wild cved tiirurc. but the quaw, laying her papoose among the blankets, with unerring instinct caught tho bundle from the hands of the falling man. and Jim Orayson's baby was saved. As for "Tanglefoot" Burton, one of the half breeds, who csmo in to tho vil lage from another wickiup and who understood Knglish. said he was clean off his head and thoni'ht he had won a race.
