F&1DAY, OCTOBER 18, 19ul. ' VX0J'AX T1UI. An Oregon paper pointa out tiit M. Leroy Iieaulien, a French writer who gathers statistics, hau bepn giv ing advice to the United Stau sound advice, couinuuis our local authority to the etfect tbat "if the United States per.iiaU iu a policy that consists in developing to the ut most its own exit's to Europe, and reducing as much as possible, Its Im ports from there, vigorous oppoailion on the Continent, and perhaps in England, will result." To prevent this, the author advis es us to buy of Europe, which re minds the iNDEi'fcNUKNT of a little atory. Home i years ago when beef on loot was cheaper than now, a farmer named lliglow sold a nice young beef to a butcher in La Fay ette. Farmer Biglow happened Inlo the market next dayiwhen the butch er pointed to thejuice raru?M and aaid, "I have bought of you and ex to trade more, can't you buy some thing of me? You know we have to make one hand wmh the other." 'Well, I don't know. I do want u piece of fresn meat. You may give . me that fore shoulder and credit its value to my account." , At the Qrst of the next month, Biglow received a statement nhowing that he owed the butcher a balance of $2.40, It was a paralyzer. The value of his bullock and coin besides was repre sented in that fore quaitf r. Biglow at once saw that he could not long af ford to trade with the butcher. So in this instance, if we have to to buy of Europe what we can pro duce or make ourselves or buy man ufactured staffs that we may be able to sell our raw products, it would be better not to trade at all. But it seems really silly to assert that we who have more than we need for home consumption, may not sell to whomsoever we can in duce to buy without being required to take in payment, what;we do not need because we are already supplied from home factory or farm, VKT1S AI 4 VKLMW jJOUKHALIST. The Independent has always been opposed to Mr. Bryan's poli cies and has believed that his elec tion would be disastrous to the country: yet it bag always given him credit for being personally an honeni ma a and has supposed that he was sincere in the views which he advo cated in most respects although, as was believed, mistaken. There is sorrow though to be compelled to change this opinion in, that regard. Mr. Bryan ia the editor and proprie tor of the Commoner aud his present occupation is, writing editorials for that paper. He dislikes Henry Wat terson, the editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, because that paper did not support him in '9G. When President McKlnley was aa-assiiiftt ed, Mr. Watterson wrote an editorial in which he said: "Is it not time that this brood of foreign riffraff and their domestic ltllow conspirators who take reluge under our govern ment in order to plan and direct de struction of all government, our own included, should be crushed'." Mr. Bryan in the Commoner says : ".The Courier Journal, Hpeaking of the assassination of Pcrsident asks: 'Is it not time that this foreign riffraff and their democratic fellow conaprirators who take refuge in our free govern ment in order to plan the destruction of all government, should be crush ed?' Mr. Watterson does not s-iecify to what fellow democratic conspira tors he refers, but other editorials which have appeared in his paper, suggest that he probably had iu mind the 6,000,000 democrats who supported the ticket in 1890 when his Influence was gives to the repub lican party." It will be noticed that Mr. Uryan deliberately substi tutes the word democratic fur domes tic and then mukes it a text from which to abuse Mr. Watterson. This is the most shameless piece of editorial work which has ever come to the notice of the lM)iirr.xiEXT. It is unfortunate that Mr. Uryan did this. It is no credit to our country that aman who has been twice no minated by a great party for the high eat office in the gift of the greatest na tion on earth should descend to such miserable subterfuge as this in order to try to wreak vengence upon a man who simply differed with him on the silver question. It is not plain how there can be an; explanation of It consistent w ith honedy, but it would be well ii it turns out that there is, If ithere was simply the quotatiot with the word chained and nothing more, one might; easily as cribe it to tthe 'typesetter or proof reader; but themannir in which it ia quoted, and (the arguement at. temt. .! i be made from the forged qtio.a .ou wiu!d stfcui to preclude ai.y i j f sich mistake.
