The great majority ot tbe people outside of the heathen, who number a few hundred thousand, and the Moham medans, who number a few hundred thousand more, are Catholics. The church presents no question, but the religious orders do present a question because they are landlords. 'The situation is much the same as in Ireland. The land is held by those who gained It by right of tbe sword. Tbe religious orders of the Philippines have come into posses sion of these lands and It is for us to Inquire Into their rights and title to them, whether the Filipinos are not doing the orders a great injustice and whether or not they are forgetting the trent . benefits of civilization w hlch the orders gave Utbem. But the situation is, the Filipinos don't like the religious orders as landlords. We can not take the land from the ' orders and we woald not If we could.
