For the second time in three years
I'. U. ban won the (State Champion
ahip In inter-collegiate debating.
Thru our victory over Willamette
University some two montlmago it
fell to Pacific University to contest
with University of Oregon for one of
the great! iuter-collegmte honors of
the year. It seemed at one time that
on account of the increasing demands
made by I he U. of O. the debate
would have to be given up, but after
a hotly contented preliminary debate
over the wire in which there was no
time limit, as long as Kugene's bank
account held out, eaceable teims
were agreed upon and our team left
Haturdav morning for the scene of
the combat. The 1. U. team ho sue
cesHfully supported their case, and
disclosed the fallacies of their oppo
nents arguments that the Judges de
cided It would be unwise tor Uncle
Ham to go into the railroad business.
. After the decision the debaters were
tendered a reception at the home ol
I'rof. Young where the victors were
congratulated and the vanquished
were consoled.
There waa a very nervous crowd
hovering around the telegraph oilice
late Hat unlay night, but all latent
energy was soon turned into making
the night hideous with yells and fish
noma. And the "Old collego bell'!
even put on a triumphant km II.
Then around a glorious big bon-flre
occured a war dance which would do
credit fol the aboriginal tribes which
used to inhabit these Tualatiu Plains.
Monday evening the boys of the
team were given a royal reception
only Huch a one as ail the students
and good townspeople can give. The
speeches of congratulation were ex
ceptionally goon full of wit, spice
and comprehensive thot. Among

Atwell, Kobt. McClelland, Miss. M.
Tibbals, Mr. Hale, Mr. K. Meresse
and the 8 members of the team, Mr.

tlie program, light refreshments were
served in two prettily decorated
rooms adjoining the auditory and
then the merry crowd gradually dis
persed never to forget this evening
of intense enthusiasm.

William, near Iloavertoo, Friday,
May 4th Henry il. Tucker, aged U0
years. The deceased contracted a
cold which settled on his lungs and
develoiail into a severe attack of
pneumonia. His advanced age was
against recoveiy.
Mr, Tucker was born lu Kentucky
lee. 12, 1804. In early life he went
to Indiana where he lived till 1H52
when he came lo Oregon and settled
near Deaverton. Id 1803 he Is re
membered as an old man tho of
cour e he was hard ley fi fty then, but
to us boys he seemed old. At that
date he was recognized as a sure shot
with a riUi). No one was able lo beat
him unlets it was his son Thomas
wlio was Ihe unquestioned law! nhol
in the county. Henry K. leaves two
sons, Thomas Tucker, till, of Hillsboro
and William Tucker, 07, of Heaver
ton. The Tucker's conic of fighting
stock, William Tucker, father of the
leceased, was a soldier in the warol
1812 anil a mem 1st of the celebrated
Kentucky regiment that went to
Detroit, lie never returned Irom thai
campaign and it is supposed that Ihe
ndians ambushed him. ltepresen-
lalivesof the lamily were in the
Revolutionary war, tradition relates
with Ihe Kumpti ss. but the story is
too dim lo repeat. The funeral was
in hunday last in Cnwccnt cemetery
where his neighbors of almost half a
century followed him lo the resting
lace.

Last Hunday Thos. Tucker, while
returning Irom the cemetery where
his father had been hurried, wa
thrown trom his buggy and seriously
hurt. Yesterday he was far from
resting easy. He was pasing over
that very bad peice of roatl from
Fannn'n to Kcaverlon and in trying
to shun a deep rut,, drove to one
side of Ihe track near a stump. The
wheel of his buggy ran on a large
root but slipHKl otr letting the oppo
site wheal into I lie deep hole. The
buggy did not lip over, but the tilt
was violent anil Mr. Tucker was
thrown rudely to Ihe ground
striking on his shoulder. He was
unconscious for twenty minutes and
then rallied only to realize that' he
was suffering intense pain. He was
unaiile to come home that day, but
on Monday morning he was able to
get to the cars and come homo where
he has since Iss'n confined to his lied.
Mrs. Tucker was thrown out at the
same time but fortunately was
hurt much.

There waa a meeting this week of
one of the old societies of Hillsboro,
Ihe Benevolent society organize!
about 20 years ago among the laxly
members of the M. K. church. The
last meeting before this week was
held abi ut 18 years ago. After that
date Hillsboro began to boom, and
the need of the the society was not
so great hence the meetings were not
held regularly. On calling the roll
this week it was found that a quo
rum was in town wherefore a special
meeting was called. The quorum
responded to-wl : Mrs. Thos. H.
Tongue, Mrs. N. B. Mead, Mrs.
Husan Brown, Mrs. M, M. Pitlenger
and Mrs. Klizabeth Crandall. The
minutes of the last meeting held 18
years go were read and approved.
Mrs. Plttenger, the president presid
ed at this meeting, but not at the
previous one for her absence had
been noted and a fine of 10 cent im
posed. This gave concern for she
could not recall the fact of Ils having
been paid. Old memories were ran
sacked and the trials and triumphs
of tbe society reviewed, it was easy
to make money those days and many
a dollar waj realized for paying the
church debt. After a most delight
ful afternoon the society adjourned
to meet again at the call of the pre
