The Forest Urote correspondent of the Oregnnian on Monday last re ported that Thus. C. Parsons who lives about four miles west of that place shot himself with a shotgun in the right temple thai, afternoon while in a demented condition. No particulars of the case are known, ex cept that he had laen receiving Christian Science treatment. Sheriff J. D. Locy of Malheur county was in town last Tuesday in search of Sherry Johnson who is ac cused of 1st! ng concerned with others in stewing horses. Johnson had been located ai Hie Johnson place near Galea Hour south of Forest drove. Locy went there got his man and started home on Tuesday evening. Une of tbe stolen animals was found In this county in the oosnossion of Mr. J. Caldwell who had bought it of Johnson. It seems therefore that Sherry has got into a tight place. Dr. W. D. Wood visited Tortland yesterday; and will while away at tend me meeting ol the Hcpuhlican State Central Committee. At this meeting the time and place for hold iug the state convection will be fix ed. The apportionment of delegates will also be made. The business to e done at the state convention is nominating a candidate for supreme judge, candidates for circuit judges, candidates for district attorneys, candidates for Joint state senators. and Joint state representatives, and choosing delegates to tbe national re publican convention to nominate a president and vice president of the United Stales. The national con vention meets this year in Philadel phia. It is not certainly known where the republican state conven tion will meet this year, but proba bly In Portland. Dr. Wood favors that city. It Is coming time for candidates for political favors to place them selves where they may be In the light of public favor. A transient who had lo soiiie of our people given his name as Brown was on Thursday evening struck by the moving passenger train about a mile west of Cornelius and killed. The Isaly was not found till next morning when the train returned after daylight. The unfortunate had spent severai day in Hiilshoro where he sold wire frame for coat rod trousers hangers. He told that he had rvlalivc in the east and that he intended to n turn to them this fall if he did well during the summer. He was a drinking man and when he left town whs somewhat under the Influence of liquor. It is sup posed he was sitting on the end of a tie by the roadside. It wa dare. The man may have Is-en asleep or his senses dulled by drink. The evening train that passed the point atC:3i)or thereabouts struck hi'u vih a dull thud and sped on. There was no out cry and the train men knew not that life had been crushsd out of a human form. The lump of clay laid with its kindred earth till discovered next morning when it was taken to the Coroners cfili-e in Forest (irove. It was reported that the deceased had slated that he had a brother in Yamhill county, but this proved to be untrue. The ver dict of the jury is that the death was an accident that under the circum stances was not preventable by the train men. PACIFIC IMVEKS1TV. The slight snow-fall on the morn ing of Feb. 14 gave the campus its first dream of winter this seison, hut like a fleeting dream it was gone be fore noon. The new fixtures for the gymna sium have been put in and add greatly to its usefulness. And in connection with our fine track it is lo be hoiied that Isith may aid in dev eloping our men so that they cau raise our last year a goodly record in field athletics. Tho Inter-collegiate debate with Willamette University was poHponed a week, on account of the sickness of Mr. Uanceneld one of our cteiwter, but l.o will probably be In good trim by the 23rd. The debate has la?en fixed for that data. The question to be discussed, "Is England Justiflid in Making War on the Brs." The Salem team affirms, the 1. U's. deny. Admission 25 cents. The new academy building is now completed and resembles very much some mansion oi colon mi limes. With its large pillars, exceedingly neat trimmings, fancy windows aud broad step it makes a most impres s vo addition to the looks of our cam pus. The academy student may well be proud of their new home, as the trimurngs of the Interior, the seating and slate-black boards are of the highest order. Friday eve, Feb. 9th witnessed one of the most exciting a well as satisfactory contests of oratory, ever held in Marsh Hall. Through the kindness of W. 11. Tibhals of Salt Lake City the 950 offered in prifs added an i creased interest from the very la-ginning. Not only were there more contestants but the seal and determination with which each one entered, insured a contest which the friends of the University will long remember. He in former day was a printer, and came in to get the odor of the ink foun tain suain. Mrs. Itowen, nee Miss Kl a Mcl.in, who came out at the time her brother was shot in Cali fornia hii lecn quite ill but is now on the convalescent list and hopes to Ih able to go home in a lew days. Mr. Harmou McLin who went to his brother when he was wouuded h is returned. He states that his brother i recovering and will be able to go to work soon. Hillslioro went dark last Monday, while the Eight and Water Com pany is setting its boiler in the new furnace. And a sorry looking town it is. Almost every business house had some kind of a lamp for lempor ary use; out it ha? lavn eight years since coal r.il whs displaced by elec tricity and the splendid private lighting plants then in use have not been kept up, so last Monday when the electric light was shut on every fx ly hunted fur the old coal oil lamps. Every old thing that the garret con claimed was brought out and filled with oil. They made some light bui there were dim scenes that we are not accustomed to. It is thought the lights will he turned on again this evening when we will have our accustomed bright stores again. There were ten contestants at Forest Grove last Friday for the Tibbals Oratorical medal. The con tcstant had written their own ora tions which had been marked for ex cellence nf composition and on that evening they went before a large au dience is Marsh Hall ami Hon. W. N. Barrett, Hon. S. B. Huston and Col. J. Jl. Eddy, Judges of delivery. The w inner of the 1st, 2d ami 3 prizes were Wm. T. Fletcher, W irii fr.'d Marsh and Itobert McClellan. The composition and delivery of all the contestants is highly spoken of especially the composition. The judges noted and absence of gestures. When appropriate gestures are omit ted. oratory cannot be said to be married, yet It Is not finished. If the young men of Forest Grove neglect gesture now they will have to take it up later in lile when there maybe more difficulties to over come, or tiiey will have to take a second place as platform speakers. In addition to what is said in an other place it is learned by te ephone that the Farmers Institute now in session at Forest Grove and held un der the aiiHpices of the Oregon Agri cultural College assisted dy the local grange opened ypstcrday forenoon at which time the attendance was large and representative. Col. Kddy made a welcoming address. This was re plied to by Dr. Withycombe who mentioned the needs and wastes of the farm. He advised the organisa tions of farmera for the protection of their interests. Prof. A. B. Cordlay had a paper on fruit pest of which there are three principle Importance: Codlin Moth, second, a scab which is a fundus growth and by some might he mistaken at ono time for a moss and at another when on the leaves, as a whitirh mildew. This fungus causes fruit to fall. Both the moth and fungus work all summer. Spraying controls the moth, spray before buds open, again when they are open, third time when the hloom falls, and again when the fruit Is growing. 1 he third pent is a new one but a vicious beast. It buries itself under the bark of apple trees and must I destroyed by spraying before it hides. There is much en- tiiuiiism manifested at the meeting at todays session. Mr. Schulmerlcn of South Tuaiatin has a paper on the care of cows This will give the ex- erience and olwervation of a success ful dairyman and will he well worth hearing. The Farmer's Institute now in session at Forest G ve, is an educational event that ought to be attended by the farmers of this county. The experts from the ex perimental station will be there pte pared to give the results not only of i heir own investigations but will tell what others have done and how they did II. In the evening Prof. Ful ton, chemist at the AgricuKaral Sta tion, has the subject of chemical changes in bread, another Intereting topic. South Tualatin this week stated that the worst fortune that has hap pened, at least to Washington county was the market two years ago that gave us dollar wheat. Farmers turned attention to the cereal, beefed their cow and now have nothing to work with.
