After reaching the West, he mined in several different counties of Cali fornia, but tiring of this, went to San Francisco, where lie worked iu a foundry for some time, and was laier engaged in the coast survey under Oilonel FairHeld. After finishing this work he came to Port land, reach ing here November 14, 18o7. Heal way remembered that day, as it was the one on which tlie state constitu tion was adopted. Until the follow ing March he worked at his trade, and then went to Forest Grov.-, open ing a blacksmith shop in thesaine mouth, which he coniit ued success fully until 1861, when he went to Idaho, and worked two years in the mines. When ho retired from the minis he purchased 116 acres of land ad joining Forest Grove, where he built home, and has since resided. His farm at the time of his death consist ed of 286 acres. Iu ls.72 he opened a hardware atore iu Forest Grove, where he prospered so much iu his busit ess that four years lat(-r he built a store 27x100 feet, wlnen he had since occupied. In this he made much space for a large stock of stove and farm implements, showing his sagacity for reaching the country trade, a large portion 01 which tie en- oyed. His was the lirst store of its kind in Forest Grove, and he was the oldest merchant continuously in business at that place. His methods of doing business were both honorable and liberal. He was always enter prising in tlie way of improvements in the city being one of the organi zers of the Kleclric Light A Can nery company. In 1859, after la?ing In rorest Grove one year, he married Mis Georgia A. lleed, of Misouri, daugh- terof Jame II. ll"ed, W'ho came to Oregon in 1852. The couple raised live aoua and three (laughters, six of whom, with their mother, survive Mr. Hughe Fugene Hughes, of New York; Samuel (I., J. Wilbur, and Georgie May, of Forest Grove, and George H Hughes and Mrs. Ku gene K. Larimore, of Pott. and. Mr. Hughe was a hold over Sen ator from this county In the stale legislature, having las-n elected in 1896. He had held the otll'-e of jus tice of Ihe peHiv in Forest Grve for 23 years. Mr. 1 1 ughes was a leader in the republican party and often a candidate, and though bis opponents ( fleeted to cotisdor him a weak can didate, they were iibver able to de feat him.
