On Tuesday last when the laborers commenced setting poles ior me tei ephone exchange they were arreted by the city authorities who at first thought that the city had never given permission to set poles within limits. K.-rl Umirtwd to meet at the uncll chamber nait Friday eve- Ding at 8 o'ciock. Mr. C. W. Hendrlx. who owns and operates the saw mill near Bloom ing, is much encouraged. Since getting t;p steam in his mill two years ago he has not lost a single day oy uiieneM. ills men nave worked every day, either In the mill or In tne rorest. rt year the busy time was late in appearing, but the fall trade was the best he has had. He now has one order for lumber that will foot up to t'MJO. This lumber is to go into a barn that Mr. Wm. Schulmerleh will build this summer. Mr. Hendrlx boasts of the thrift of his neighborhood and accounts for it with the dairying Industry that sup ports two creameries. He says he has not a single account on his books that he would discount a cent be cause of a fear that it will not be promptly paid at maturity, whilo at Green l.y. . W.ifrtf-.r, n tion, there are several thousand dol lars in old accounts which he would he glad to discount at fifty per cent. Tho plank road meeting at Glen- coe last week was well attended and the work- initiated will lay down a plank road before the rain fall again. A committee composed of J. V. Ooodin, O. G. Barlow and W. 8. Jlac helder was appointed to report to an adjourned meetintr thf nmhahl cost of the road and the smountof money, labor and material that can lie secured for the enterprise. The committee .his spent a few hours canvassing and secured pledges for $2000. The committee Is quite san guine that $12,000 can be raised for the mad. If a popular subscription fulls short of raising the required sum, then the promoters have In mind building the road under the state law which allows the property on both sides the road to be bonded for the coet thereof. Road Suitcrvisor Dally is opening a ditch on the North side of the county road pawing the fair grounds and continuing it through the city on base line street as fur east as the east side of of Third street there it will be met by a trench down the east side of Third street from Washington. MICHAEL HKtS. Michael Wren, one of the first settlers of Tuulatin Piains, now the heart of Washington county, died at his home near l eiitervillo last Satur day morula? ul'.h ait attack of pneumonia. The deceased was born at Winne- peg City, Canada, June 5, 1824, heuce at the lime or bis ueatn lie was iu the 72d year of his age. In 1810 the Hudson Bay Company, 3 ...2.fc twpAt0.i Cxim1.aa lot commercisl venture, held sway In this Northwest. The policy of the company favored k-epug the coun try drained by the Columbia and Its tributaries for a hunting grouud, but the pushing Westward of tho Amer ican missionaries and tho mission aries of the M. E. church was notice to the Hudson B.iy factors that colo nization would result. To meet this the Puget Bound Agricultural Com pany, which had close relations with the tiuudou nay Coinpariy, was or ganized. The Puget Sound com ianv plunned tf colonize the couutry about Puget Sound out north of Seattleand to that end went among the well-to-do fnru.ers then living in Red River Valley in what Is now known as Manitoba for their settlers. The glowing picture of the fruitful farms and comfortable homes await ing them at Puget Sound induced some forty odd families to come to the Pacific. Antony these early immigrants was Michael Wren, then a lad of 10 years. Thine colonists, for that is what they were induced to come West to be, not trapers, were greatlv disappointed when they got to Puget Sound. Every repre sentation was false and no promise was kept. '1 lie soil was thin and rocky. No pastures were fenced and no houses were built. This was late in 1840 or early in 1811. The disgust ed peasantry abandoned; the .Puget Sound country and the pretended paternalism of the Puget Sound Company. They struck out for themselves and a part of them reach ed the Tualatin Plalus which seemed a goodly loi-atiou. Among this number was Flfltiwho till recently lived on Wapato Lake,' Hon. Henry Buxton of Forest Grove, McKay, who settled out by Gleucoc, and Monroe, who found a valuable, faim near by, while boy Wren selected the tract that is now known as Michael Wreu and wife's donation. The settlement was uiudu in 1811 and never abandon ed till the R-iicr Death gathered the pioneers to himself. In 1846 Michael Wren wedded Miss Christina Monro, who for fifty years shared his griefs and Joys, his reverses and successes, but now is left alone to tread life's pathway, though her declining years will be cheered by the sweet ministrations of Iter daughters, all married save one, but located iu homes near the old homestead. The treatment of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company was such that the immigrants of 1341 quickly clung to the side of the United States, for at that time Oregon was Jointly oc cupied by the citizens of the United States and the subjects of Great Brit ain, and the cause of "saving Ore gou" was greatly aided by John Flett. Henry Buxton David Monro. Michel Wren and their neighbors. Michael Wren was 8 steadfast citizen of the United States in those early days and an active and interested participant in public affairs down to his last sick sickness. He was a republican in dis affiliations and his influence was always felt at the state and county elections. His pastor, on the day of hi funeral, bore testimony concerning his Christian experience, and stated that although he had not been a church member but a few years, he had for a long time been an active and consistent Christian By occupation the deceased was a farmer, and his broad ocres Dear ies timony to his caretui and intelligent till ige. The funeral was conducted by Montezuma lodge, No. 50, 1. O.O. F., assisted by Washington lixlge, iso. 48. though tne deceased was a mem tcr of Gaston lodge. The remains were deposited In the cemetery north of Cornelius. The congregation of neighbors that assembled to pay their last respects was a very learge one and eloquently testified of the f steein they had tor their departed friend. ( II1LLSB0H0 PUBLIC SCHOOL. The second lecture of the public school course was given at the court house last Friday evening by Mr. W. H. Beharrell, a successful business man of Portland. Mr. Beharrell is a valued friend of Mr. D. M. C. Gault, editor of the 1nik.i'KInent, audit was upon his invitation that the lec ture was arranged and huecesfully carried out. The speaker is a humorist of ability and entertained his audience by words of wit as wed as or wisdom; the two entertainments being especially well received. The music lurnished by the Hlllsboro band and Misses Merryman and Poe added much to the evening's enter- tnlnment. E. V. l S. C. E. ' To The Indf.dkxpent: Referr ing to the report of the sugar beet committee published In your last Is. sue, the low analysis of 13.90, sac aharine matter In the Washington county beets of 1891 should be Iguor ed for the reason that some of the samples were grown on beaverdam which produces beets too poor in su gar f jr a factory. The sample sent to Corvallis by roe, analyzed only o.Hi and a lew such sampTes'wouid reduce the average in a county or a section of the state, and I do not hes itate to say that it is owlug to the use of too many beaverdam beets for analysis that the Willamette Valley appears to be less favorable for sugar than Southern or Eastern Oregon. In 1892 there wtis no nport of beaverdam beets, and I have uo doubt that this Is the reason that the yield of sugar in both our county and state is higher than iu 18.)1. If the loam soil of Washington county will yield beets that contain 18.8 of sugar as it did with me last season, the promoters of a sugar fac tory at Hiilsboro ought to las satUUed Joiix Henry. President McKinley will be in augurated on Thursday, and the svnate will probably assemble on Friday for an executive session that will keep the members together till the extra session convents about the 15th, that is, always supposing that an extra session will be called. At noou- Wednesday a cenator moved to adjourn which motion contemplated an adjournment till the next day. The jsiint of order was raised that tiie resolution adopted the day before by a vote of 18 to 12, to adjourn "sine die" took precedence of a simple motion to adjourn. ' Pres ident Simon refused to recognize the point of order and put thtT motion for simple adjournment. Notwithstand ingthis the majority ot the senate goes home from Salem.
