The bowsprit was a barley fork, with Billy Bryan impaled on one tine and one-eyed Tillman on another. Pen- noyer was berore the mast and Jones held the tiller. Une sail was patched with the "Otherside" and another with the "Argus." Judge Cornelius was the first seaker, and his words were so ear nest that the lights refused to shine, but they did not hinder the speaker calling attention to the populist ma jority in South Hillsboro, where T. D. Humphreys, T. II. Tongue and Oault live. The Independent wishes to remark that those gentle men have no intention of removing from the precinct, for there Is no place in the county needing their votes more, besides, as Mr. Tongue explained later, all the work of the parties named was required In North Hillsboro, where Judge Cornelius himself lives. Representative-elect Marsh fol lowed in words that elicited great ap iilause. After him came Hon. W N. Barrett. II. S. Hudson was sick and could not attend, but sent a let ter which was read by Chairman Wood. II. V. dates was the next speaker, with Congressman Tongue last. The meeting was a fitting close for the most active campaign that has ever been waged in the county. Head Letter List. The Capital Journal, Hofer's pa paper, Is publishing charges of fraud and coercion said to have been per petrated on election day in Portland. A personal luqlury of friends who participated in the election In Port land and of those who were present hut did not vote elicits the statement that a more orderly election has not been held for years; that no one who had a right to vote was hindered or prevented from doing so; some who were known to be ineligible were not admitted to the polling booth. There is not wanting evidence of an in tended wholesale fraud at the polls by the hobo element, but their methods were discovered so that they were compelled to move on. The Bryan-Union Campaign Committee had carriages out bearing flags and McKinley and Hobart decorations, and the hobo passengers wore Mc Kinley buttons. But the Intended ruse would not work. There was an earnest sentiment abrrsid that day which forced a quiet and an honest election. The supreme court has handed down Its decision in the branch in sane asylum case. The injunctlou allowed by Judge Hewitt of the third district is made perpetual.
