The West has always la-en credited with what is crude in manners and monstrous in finance, and while West" may kave at one time In cluded the whole of the Mississippi states, latterly the term was attached to thoe com monwfalths westward from Kansas and Nebraska, but a late advice aiiniiipanylntr ft money order received by IWuiaster Brown, dhows that Iowa was taken from the li-t too soon. It is said that Miller vis ited his wife on Wednesday morning, rurther than that rumor, nothing has been heard of the pair. Wonder If he will soon hear the last of it. This is how the Hhcriilau Sun Guild's tapers treats an inci dent that Is coming to have a blunt point : "lie preventative H. V. The mtauing of the instinct pos sessed liy migratory birds is disclosed to the human Hai-ies, and man is made to realize Its power along through the months of July and August. No sooner has the season arrived than an almost uncontrolable desire takes po-session of the people to get away for a few weeks' recrea tion by the nod or In the mountains. Thre seems to be no reason for the going. The time comes, and whether debilitated or in robust health, all go who can get away front home, even if it Is but for a few days. The season I now on, and not a day cornea but excursionists, with camp equipage or bathiug suit, oliey the inward impulse and hie away to mountain or beach for the rest which invigorates. The residence of N. C. Richardson, in Suuth Tualatin precinct, about three miles south of town, caught lire Tuesday noon ami was burned to the ground. -Nothing wa saved from the house. Mrs. Hichardson, who ia quite aged, and somewhat deaf, was preparing dinner. Uoing onto the porch, she noticed smoke issuing through the floor. At the same time she heard a roaring over head, and on looking up saw that the whole roof was enveloped In dames. Too much headway had been made to attempt to extinguish the tire. Indeed, she could do little else than herself flee. The loss is f 1,000, with $750 insurance. When Deputy Sheriff Oeo. Bagley went out to arrest Kelliher he was asked to notice If he had a watch and ring on hi person. At the time, Bagley thought the watch and ring would be mean of Identifica tion. He did not know that those were the articles that had been stolen. Afterward he went to Bux ton and made a thorough search, but could find nothing. Not being suc cessful that way, he offered a reward of five dollars. The watch was soon afterward found and put into the hands of the offlcers. This will probably be the bit of evidence that will send the househreaker to Salem. At the recruiting station last Sat urday evening, about twenty-five veteran appeared and signed the muster roll for a U. A. H. post. Since then enough name have been added to swell the list to thirty. Before they are mustered In, It is desired that there be forty name to the list. It is the wish to enroll all veterans In this new Mtt who by reason of location do not belong to Beaverton or Forest drove. The fee is a half dollar ikt inemla-r. Another meeting will lie held next Saturday evening at Orange Hall, though it may be a month before the Hwt is finally instituted. Crops While the wiirui, sunny weather during the week from the 8th to the l-'ilh of July cause.! grain to riis-u rapidly, it alsi had a tend ency to shrink the kernel of "lute sowti tra'" "ot fi""'- the conditions w inch huve prevailed recently (cooler weather and cloudi ness), the defects of the previous week have ls-n remedied to a large extent. A heavier crop and a better quality of late-sown grain will Is' the result of this act of providence. Grain fall-sown, and oats have not ceased to ria n rapidly. Harvest of fall sown wheat and oats has commenced In the Willamette valley in nearly all sections. Harvest has com litems-. I also in the southern coast counties, and in Douglas, Josephiiu ami Jackson counties the headers have made good progress. Specula tion as to iMiHsible yields is la-iug r. sorted to, as usual. l hat the grain crou is far sutierior to that of the sea sou of 1SUI is Is-yond a doubt. The extent of nossihle ylelil of the present eron over that of theTast season Is place.1 at one-quarter to une-inini; this estimate Is popular and plausible r ' . . . in those districts Where ine grain anhis Infested the wheat in Istfl No damage is anticipated from Ih. grain aphis this season, since grain has matured beyond the critical point and the Insects are comparatively few. The oat crop is generally heavy in all sections: it is expected to yield more than ail average. In alsiut 10 dav threshing will commence in the Willamette vallev. Harvesting of the hav crop is neiirlng a close in all except some coast sections. A large yield of hay of very gmsl quality has been secured. During the rains in the early portion of the month some hay which was in ine shock suneren slight injury, but the bulk of lhecro is of suia-rior duality. Owing to cool ami cloudy weather of the past week the tender hop vine- have recovered from the scalding ol the previous week and are again making progress. Knglish cluster hops are in full bloom, and other varieties arecoming into bloom. All indications favor a good yield. As a precautionary measure the hop yards are being sprayed; the hop lice are fewj In no section is damage re ported from them. Potatoes are making good growth; the ground i again Is-coming dry in many sections, but it is thought that the moisture received by the rains in the early por tion of the month will la; sufficient to mature a good crop. As to the pota to crop and its progress towards ma turity no advene leports have been received! the crop appears to promise a success in all parts ol the western portions of the state. Garden vege tables, melons, corn, Ix-ans and onions are continuing to make gomt pro gress. egetables, melons and black berries are plentiful in the markets. Uirge quantities of peaches are lieing shipped to market from Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties. rrom present prospects the harvest of fruit will be large and of good quality. The apple crop is full of promise. So far this season the fruit pest has not devoloped to an alarm ing extent, and what spraying has been done was owing to a feeling of precaution. A war ol extermination lias been wag.sl against these insect during the past few years, and the fruits of such labors are liecomlng apparent. A general slate of pros- ierlly prevails. to km: ins. J.
