The I'nlteU State govern in ut Is not K'Antg to Uj overthrown ty lX-U and Hovercltcn. It luay liuve wh ined cruel to Are Into that ( lil'.x iitob, but it wa not. Tlmt act ha auvetl liuulrtU of live. The coal titluer of Indiana an nouneo that they will aaln strike In Aujfuht. Well, let them quit work. They have the right. Hut let pro tectlon Uj extended to the non-union men w lio Ink' their plait. The C hit uko U. 8. rrnnd Jury liu luado eonitncndublu rgtent toward an Invalidation of Mr. Debit. lVrha he will soon nee tlmt treason aifalnut tho U. H. ifovernnient Is a different matter from quarting with Jim Hall. ' The aoldiera lu mercy tired over the head.4 of the mob la an Illinois tow n and killed two Innocent women in their own Iiouacs. It were better that half that disorderly mob had bitten the dust than that thorn two Women should have died. Hoverelj;n, Oram! Ma-ter of the Knight of Iutxir, ha advlacd a strike, but tho local a-Knibliea do not go out. There U difficulty when a general ntrlke in-cuim, for then all are Idle and there are no wago earnera to contribute to the support ' of the loungers. The pojiullnt committee killed two bird j with one atone when In en dorsed the American Railroad Union the strike and Its own party. For fully 93 ier cent, of the citizens of Oregon and of the union for that matter, are loyal to the government, Hud aupport the president In hla measures taken to restore and main- tain order. i- . - - , -. j Strikers do nut hesitate to turn to capitalist and accept alma with which to buy food. In Sacramento they paved a subscription paper among the business men and raised $2000. They then boasted of what tbey had done. They could have earned tlmt sum in two days, but that would have been dishonorable In an "organized" laborer. The Industrial situation continues to improve, and rumors from the council of the Federative trade Dow in M-ewion at Chicago, are to the effect that no sympathetic strike will be ordered. 1-lfclit hundred butchers struck yesterday at the Chicago stin k yard, hut two men applied for every vacancy. The nun union men are receiving protection from the militia. The Oswego I run Worker Ihltik the nlrike hat not been a fair test of strength ltetween the employees and railroad compauies. The strikers In terfered with the running of mail trains and by so doing invited the presence of U. 8. trooe. They also hung around as If yearning for Jobs, and did not permit an opportunity to ace if trains could he ocrated with out the assistance of union men. The strikers have displayed weak ness, lack of confidence in their ow n strength, and poor silicy. The U-tter element of Portbual, called the striker la-t Huuday by occupying the l'laai with Ilev. Ir. Wallace, of the First Congregational church, for senker. Ills subject was an answer to the iutlon "Is it yvrong tit he a capitalist?" There v.-a. an attempt on the part of some boozers lo brink up the meeting, but it fulled. One f.ld man cursed Yashiutti, Lincoln and Cleveland, and was promptly knocked down by an older Grand Army man. At the lse of the rebellion in 180ft the great state' rights temple, in some quarters considered grand and of mngninceiit proportion, was a black mass of charred timber amid beans of d'-brlsw lth here and there chimney left standing. Hint' then a few have pntid to rcmlr the htrmture by building to llune smoke llut, but within th last eight days, President Cleveland hus knocked down those monuments of departed greatness so that there is not one brick left usn another that la not thrown do n. 'Tis well. Two years ago, when private In tervsts started to protect Itself Inde pendent of tlte state, 'when the mob attacked the i'inkcrtou at Homestead, there was great wun- friaiat and public opinion retired the private guard. After wards, whra the State militia was used to subdue She mobs, enothcr outcry was raised whose echo rolled through the 14 Oregon campaign in "We demand the abolition of the Oregon National Guard." and now the rioters "de mand" the withdrawal of the V. & troops, and one political part) in Or egon, by its central committee en dorses tl course of the strikers and -extends moral aid to them. W Lore- fore it would seem that these people would remove all protection , to to clety in tho enjoymeut of properly j clxbu. A G ALU SO TYXAXSY. The Industrial disturbance, which have for the pest two weeks disar ranged communication front the Alleghanles to the Pacific ocean, are not caused by a conflict between labor and capital, but between ca pi tal and a labor trust. Tne labor soci etles bave not all the skilled labor In the country, nor half of It It Is idle for Debstoaay that the railroad com panies cannot run trains because of a luck of men. Such la not the case. There are thousand and tens of thousands of non-union men capable of taking hold of trains and operat ing them. ' Why don't they do it? Simply because Mr. Debs and his "organized labor, by violence, by murder; prevents such a thing. This U not only true of railroad employes, but of Journeymen of every other trade. And worse stllk, a very large per cent of 'the members of these organization are there, not from choice, hut because they are compel led to join that they may work un molested. Were government to exact a license of fifty cents or a doU lar per month, permitting mechanics to follow their respective callings ! there would lie great complaint, but when a few walking dehvates decree such an a-elii-nl, men submit to their demands. j The whole system Is a galling tyranny and the labor world ought now to rise up in Its strength aud overthrow It. If the railroad 'companies will assure non-union men Of protection protection of lilo aud freedom from moli'stalion, tin y ciiu i-t all the men they need, aud so euu any other em ployer. Hut oou union men love life quite as well as other men and they do not care to rUk It where these violent strikers are demanding' and taking it. Uut the railroads them selves are Intimidated by thia "or ganized" lalairnnd cringe, like cow ards. D l and Sovereign are not of the royal blood, and if a dignified aud firm aland is taken, those worthies will besieedlty dethroned. Now will the railroad couianieo rise to the emergency? Will they fill vacancies with competent men w hen they offer, protect them w hen employed, and assure them of steady employment? If that is done, as many men as are needed can be had. But, heretofore, It has been the prac tice with transportation compunies, after strikes had proceeded to a cer tain point, to discharge the men who had stood by them in a time of trouble, and fill their places with the old strikers. Non-union men have been buffeted by both sides and it is not strange that they hang back. If coal miners, silver miners or gold miners leave the pits, put in non union men and protect them. Let it be understood that vacancies will be filled as they occur with applying operatives, regardless as to whether they are unionist or not. Iibor employers should adopt a scale of wnges aud rules of work that are Just to employes, and stop this arbi tration of disputes. The employers should see that there are no grounds for disputes, and when reatless em ployes invent such, let them quit and find employment where things run smoother. Sovereign has called out the Knights of Ialar, one million strong, he claims. He hnsd me more, lie has taken the bread from the mouths of two million women and children. EO.riYOLEJT TO X.IKT1AL LAW.
