EntToit Ixdi-.pf.noknt: The discussion and suggestions of your correspondent a to tho liest way to Improve our public roads, Is getting quite interesting, and lead to the practical question, can we do il? and how? Antimud says plank them, and I quite agree with 111 til, that to utilise our big llr trees aud make them do valuable service In thl way, is the only thing within our reach if we are to allbrd the desired relief to any considerable isirtiou of our people iu the near future, for stone road to be a general beuctli Is simply out of the qucntioti for Immediate relief. Mo we will turn our attention to the planking, hs suggested, and lu order to give the greatest good to the greatest number, cover a few live mile stretches leading out from the mont important centers. First, then, begin at Hillsboro and cover five mile of tho main trav eled road across the bottom leading to Smith Tualatin. Then Ave more from llillslmro along the old Hall's mill road, then to the Chalmers farm with a branch to Ulencoe, about sev en and a half miles. Then from Cor nelius to Ccntreville two and a half mile, then from Forest firove to Urecnvilte five miles. Then on the most needed lines from Recdvllle five milt", and to avoid local Jealous ies as far a possible, let brother Paulsen locate a flve-mile stretch. This makes thirty-five miles that should be done immediately. Now for tho figure and general fact. I think we may as well cut our plank thrco Inches thick and Mixtct-n feet long so two loaded teams can pas conveniently, and for the convenience of figuring make them avenge twelve inches wide. Adop ting Antimud's rule, leave one inch spa between tho planks, we cover one rod with fifteen planks, each one containing forty-fight feet, we thus use 720 rcet to tho rod. 2:K),40O feet to do one mile, or 1,152,000 on each live-mile stretch. We require s,0G4, oou to cover the thirty-five miles thus proposed, which I etimute will eo-t at f p r tho itand, $H,;il. Now, here is a nice, little Job for the sawmill man who is going to get a mill for (100, set it up in one d.iv. borrow it thresher engine, and tw the plank for 1 or " per thnus iu I. Well, I pr?-u ne, our hon oiaMo county court and board of c mu.i'ioncr Mill either buy a mil! i , " "rh' "r . ? " t .i ... -1 . . . I . a. ii. i w ' ',l """" """"" some speciti iiiion tnai must . is? complied with. I think this man will tirnl it necessary to either en large hi plant or take a back scat. What we want is plank sawed nut of giNnl-vied l'ig up to forty Inchc diameter. To do thi we must have a goisl double circular ortable mill, currying two forty, or forty two-Inch saws with a thirty-five horse-power engine hihI strong belts to saw this Imr 1 tlr into planks that will be durable and make a success of It, but it can not be d mo profitably with a singlecircul.tr or side edger, tlri ven by a weak power. My exper lencc In sawing hard fir Into square edged lumber of any kind will not permit me to bice my estimates on so low a ngure as 14 or even 15. Houbtle there are good liberal men owning timber suitable for road plank near the proposed line, who would be willing to give It free for such a public lncflt, and so reduce tho cast that much to the county, and thus help th contractor to make bread ami meat, furnishing it as specified at !) a thousand at the mill. If fairly good timber can be got free of stumpage near water, for MittmuK pu it'll) OTiivav v-v.w w 500,000 or more can be sawed at one setting of the mill. How are we going to raise tha money. I the quostlon t WeU, I tklafc tke sare aa4 eal? Aivarde.l -Highest Honors-World'a Fair. CREAM MEflNG MOST PERFECT MADE. A purs Craps Gtam of Tartar PowJer. Frss from Ammonia, Alum or any other adulterant 40 YEARS THE STANDARD. way to accomplish anything I to bond the county for the desired amount, say t'.tf,000 for 20 year, then hurry up the Improvement and we will save In wear and tear more than the coat, principle and interest lu 10 years, and make a hundred per cent., besides the enhanced value In real estate all over the county, ajid I think those living in the foothills, or even the most remote districts would realize more in proportion in en hanced values than those in the val ley nearer the terminal ceiUer. 1 Hut there 1 another fact worthy of our consideration that may greatly extend the bent-tit to i derived by the people of the interior. There are but few, if any, oi tin lines proposed, that demand continuous planking over a flve-mile stretch, but with protier rounding up or turopiking the uplands w Ith good surface drain age, the swale or bottom land only need be planked, and thus what would cover rive mile may be ex tended to ton or fifteen milt., reach ing the homes of the people in near ly all directions, giving the hill settlers another advantage, a their taxes are very small as compared with tho-te In tho valley, whoie holding arc rated much higher. Then let 11 get out of the old ruts by using wide tires, f,,uf to six inches on all heavy carting, thus rolling firm, smooth surface on the un planked portions, and avoiding the chopping-knife system . of running the narrow tires even on our plank roads, and the experience of a five years trial will convince the most skeptical that roads tlui treated will be firm snd smo'Uh, and even the plank will hist much lougcr a well as the horses. Another proposition I that the Tarious road districts along these line-Jare to prepare tho roadbed by turnpiking and properly raising it to receive the plank, anil lay them firm ly on the road, and as an inducement to redouble diligence and vicing with each other, I would give the first benefit to those who make the first and best preparation to receive it, and so m to th end of the ma terial to be furnished. This plan would throw all the labor of preparation for and laying the plank tin the district through which the lines are to rn and ought to shut off all local ji ulousie of those not quite reached, as't hey are only taxed for the general luml, while they are certainly interested in the general beneflis if not living directly on the lines thus improved. Now, Mr. Editor and citizens of Washington county, though these figures may seem large, the improve ments propositi are not imsssibill ties, If, instead of crawling into the cau't-do-it hiding place nnd pulling the bole in after us, and becoming not only musslacks, but mo-sed art over, we, w ith an unanimous determ ination to do it, take hold of the work and resolve to persevere until we relieve ourselves from the pres ent horrid condition of our highways and byways that are not only a bar tu our onward progress and pros perity, but an actual disgrace to our intelligence and civilization. if legal (iinicullle stand in our way, we, the iieople who constitute this government and commonwealth, can and should remove them to en able us to build up and improve for otir present and future wellhclug.
