w here th e F u g llsh soldiers hud ju s t
d e feated th e M aoris. A little p a rty of
colonial troops, p u rsu in g fugitives,
cam e upon th ree nativ es, tw o old men
a n d one young fellow .
T h e youth, seeing the soldiers, dro p ­
ped on one knee and aim ed w ith his
g u n a t th e ad v an cin g p a rty , w hich
h alted u m om ent, w hile th e old men
ra n to w ard the forest. T he old men
h ad th ro w n aw a y th e ir firearm s In
o rd e r to m ake escap e easier.
T he soldiers fired a t th e youth, but
m issed. W ithout d isch arg in g his gun
he sp ran g to his feet and ra n on In
ad v an ce until ho c au g h t up w ith tho
old men once m ore.
Then, facing
about, he p resen ted his gun ns before,
b u t reserved his fire.
T he w eary old m en g rad u ally drew
ueur cover. O nce more th e soldiers
fired nnd m issed; once m ore th e gal­
la n t fellow tu rn e d and bounded on.
T he old men w ere close to th e forest
jv h en the youth, n early fa in tin g , uguiu
k n elt and took aim . but still did not
fire.

nnd rushed to th e forest, b u t foiled to
c a p tu re the tw o fugitives, who, safe

William Thompson, better known as
Lord Kelvin, was born in Glascow. He
matriculated at the University of Glas-
cow when eleven years of age. He
also attended Cambridge for four year',
He won the lastiug esteem of Ameri-
cans by his hearty cooperation in the
project of the Atlantic cable, which
was then the foremost topic of the day.
His special scientific work was along
the lines of light, heat and electricity,
Joseph Thompson, an Englishman,
was the third of this group of eminent
scientists. H e also was educated in
the best colleges. He was Doctor of
Science in Oxford, and served also at
Dublin, and Columbia. In 1906 he
was awarded the Noebel prize for his
work in physics. He gave valuable
knowledge of radium and electricity,
Prof. Cook’s paper was somewhat brief,
but well written and interesting.
