J H W hite .................... .1 William Thompson, better known as Lord Kelvin, was born in Glascow. He matriculated at the University of Glas- cow when eleven years of age. He also attended Cambridge for four year', He won the lastiug esteem of Ameri- cans by his hearty cooperation in the project of the Atlantic cable, which was then the foremost topic of the day. His special scientific work was along the lines of light, heat and electricity, Joseph Thompson, an Englishman, was the third of this group of eminent scientists. H e also was educated in the best colleges. He was Doctor of Science in Oxford, and served also at Dublin, and Columbia. In 1906 he was awarded the Noebel prize for his work in physics.
