Washington, April 10.— A report is sued by the department of Commerce j and Labor on the Cuban trade says: Cuba ranks second in importance in the trade relations of the United States with other American countries. The total trade of the United States with the principal countries of America in the calendar year of 1905 was: Can ada, $203,000,000; Cuba, $125,000,- Resume o f the Less Important but 000; Brazil, $111,000,000; Mexico, Not Less Interesting Events $92,000,000. S W E P T BY T ID A L W AVE. Naples, April 9.— Mount Vesuvius is a colossal cauldron of fire and the town of Boscatrecase, on its southern declivi ty, has been transformed into a gray is land of ruin by the ashes from the crat er of the volcano. Torrents of liquid fire, resembling in thedistanceserpents with glittering yellow and black scales, are coursing in all directions, amid rumblings, detonations and earth trem blings, w hile a pall of sulphurous smoke that hovers over all makes breathing difficult. The streams of lava are resistless. They snap like pipestems the trunks of chestnut trees hundreds o* years old, and blight with their torrid breath the blooms on the peach trees before the trees themselves have hem reached. The molton streams do not spare the homes of the peasants, and when these have been razed they dash into the wells as thongh seeking to slake their thirst, and, after filling them, continue their course down the mountainside. Everywhere in the vicinity of the volcano pitiful scenes are witnessed— women are tearing their hair in their grief and old men are crying alond at the loss of their beloved homesteads. New craters have opened at different points on the mountain, hat it is im possible to ascertain their number or where they are situated. Naples is the mecca of the alarmed country people and they have been flocking into the city in great numbers The lava flow approached the out skirts of the village of Clarem and than suddenly ceased advancing. Fitly acres of ground about the village were over flowed and the crops ruined. The eruption has caused a great deal of damage, as the heating lava streams have withered vegetation, while the ashes have settled on everything. Instead of many thousand acres to reseed, as at firs: re- ported, not more than 2,000 acres in the entire county have been reseeded. Many farmers secured seed wheat and vitrol, in many instances paying fancy prices for blnestem, which was scarce, only to find that their grain was not in jured or only slightly. The only see tion where there was any loss was the northwestern part, where the soil is light and there was comparatively no snowfall. The scare was due to the fact that the tops of the grain in some places was frozen, but ttiie is consider ed a benefit instead of an injury by many, as they say that it has caused the grain to stool out more than other wise. The fruit is also ceming out nicely and the damage w ill not be nearly so great as waB feared. The peaches suf fered most, but there w ill be a partial crop and unless a later frost occurs there will be a full crop of all other va rieties of fruit. Naples BuildinQ Is Crushed tj Weight oi Ashes.
