One of Mr Gotshall’s literary friends had pre viously volunteered to send Mr. Got- ihall one of Gilbert Parker’s most interesting books. “Have you re ceived ‘The Right of Way’ as yet?” inquired the litterateur. “No,” re sponded Mr. Gotshall sadly, think ing of his franchise grant held up by the board of aldermen. “The board of aldermen hasn’t passed it yet.” _______________ U nited States L and office, O regon C ity, Or. ALGERNON D RESSER, R egister. Iceland’s F irs t R ailroad. If you are seeking a home and want — A BARGAIN— we can suit you, having the best list of lands and homes in the county. Write or call on us at Cornelius. Iceland, hitherto the only Euro pean country without a railroad, is to lose this distinction shortly, ac cording to the Railway Age. A line of road will soon be begun by an English company to connect the sul phur mines at Theisstareykir, in the north of the island, with the port of Huavik. The road will be seven teen miles long and passenger traf fic, of course, will be an unimpor tant factor in its operation. R . W . Arnold of Delavan re joices in the possession of a pair of calfskin boots which he has worn fifty-two years and which still are in good condition. Mr. Arnold bought the boots in Moravia, N. Y., and has used them for Sundays and “dress up” occasions over since.— Chicago Record-Herald. In the old days at the country fairs in England voung pigs were carried to market in a bag and were often sold without the purchaser having the forethought to open the bag enough to be sure that what he was buying was really a pig. Time and again the trick was played by waggish countrymen on some stupid, trusting country bumpkin until it gave us the adage, “To buy a pig in a poke,” which means to make any foolish bargain for an article we have not seen.
